Young Reds stay firmly in postseason hunt with 2-1 victory in Tennessee

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Toronto FC II made a statement of its playoff intents with a 2-1 road win over Chattanooga Red Wolves SC at CHI Memorial Health Stadium on Saturday night.

Toronto FC II scored early in each half and held on for the victory, just its third road win of the season. It was a crucial victory for the visitors, moving them temporarily into the sixth and final playoff spot. It was Toronto’s third-straight victory.

Chattanooga’s loss, paired with Greenville Triumph SC’s victory over New England Revolution II on Saturday night, means that second place will be on the line when the Red Wolves visit Greenville next weekend. It was Chattanooga’s second-straight home loss after opening the season with a 12-match home unbeaten run.

Paul Rothrock scored the opening goal of the match in the 8th minute with a diving header to finish Kobe Franklin’s free kick.

Toronto doubled its lead just two minutes into the second half with Franklin feeding Rothrock again. Franklin took advantage of a poor pass from Chattanooga goalkeeper Tim Trilk to take possession and cross for Rothrock’s second headed goal of the match.

Franklin leads the team with six assists this season.

Chattanooga found a way back into the match in the 77th minute, with Juan Galindrez cutting the deficit in half. Jason Ramos headed a Red Wolves free kick onto the post and Galindrez cleaned up the rebound for his team-high 10th goal of the season.

The comeback fell short though, with Chattanooga unable to find an equalizer.
