27-year-old full back brings Liga MX experience to inaugural roster

MADISON, Wisc. – Forward Madison FC bolstered its back line on Sunday as the club announced the signing of left back Christian “Pato” Diaz for the 2019 USL League One season, pending league and federation approval.

The 27-year-old, who was born in Guadalajara, Mexico but spent much of his youth in California, brings top-level experience to Madison having previously played for Liga MX sides Atlas FC and Leones Negros.

Diaz, who most recently played for Mexican club Tlaxcala FC, said the opportunity to return to the United States was too good to pass up.

“I was really looking to play over here,” said Diaz. “I’m really happy that I’ve signed. This is a great opportunity that the coaches have given me.”

Madison Head Coach Daryl Shore believes that Diaz’s signing is not only a coup for the club, but also shows FMFC’s commitment to bringing in players that fans can relate to.

“It’s a testament to our organization, because when you sign a player of Christian’s pedigree, it blends in right away with our Latino community in Madison,” Shore said. “Fans who are familiar with Mexican soccer will understand where Christian came from, that he’s played in tough games in Mexico and that he’s going to bring that experience to Forward Madison.”

Diaz believes that he will fit in well with Shore’s attack-minded system and is more than happy to get up the field in his role as a full back.

“Coach Shore wants a really offensive team, and having the ball, passing the ball around, that’s my style,” Diaz said. “How I started my career was more offensive - I was a winger. I can defend, but when I get the ball I can attack well.”

Diaz becomes the 15th player to sign for Madison ahead of its inaugural League One season, joining J.C. Banks, Zaire Bartley, Brian Bement, Brandon Eaton, Paulo Júnior, Eric Leonard, Jeff Michaud, Vital Nizigiyimana, Josiel Núñez, Carl Schneider, Don Smart, Brian Sylvestre, Danny Tenorio and Connor Tobin.
