2015 ACC Midfielder of the Year brings two years of Championship experience

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Greenville Triumph SC announced on Tuesday that it has signed former Clemson midfielder Paul Clowes for the 2019 USL League One season, pending league and federation approval.

“It’s this new group of players and staff that will set the standards and culture for this team for years to come,” said Clowes. “I think that’s an exciting challenge. I’m confident with the guys coming in and with [Head] Coach John Harkes’ ambition and experience that the first season will be extremely rewarding for the team and the fans.”

A four-year letter winner with the Clemson men’s soccer team, Clowes played 85 games and recorded four goals and 10 assists over his collegiate career. The Manchester, U.K., native led the Tigers to the 2014 ACC Conference Championship and was named tournament MVP. Clowes closed out his Clemson career in 2015 as the ACC Midfielder of the Year.

“Coming back to the Upstate to play is amazing,” said Clowes. “This state feels like home to me, and I owe so much to the people in this community who made my time at Clemson so special.”

Clemson Head Coach Mike Noonan described his former player as a perfect balance of style and steel who will set the standard for what it means to be a Triumph player.

“Paul Clowes is unequivocally one of the best young men and players I have coached during my tenure at Clemson,” Noonan said. “I’m excited he’s coming home!”

Following his time at Clemson, Clowes was selected with the 32nd overall pick in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft by D.C. United. He never featured for the club before joining the Charlotte Independence of the USL Championship. In 2017, Clowes competed in the Championship for Orlando City B, logging 1,160 minutes over 16 games and scoring one goal for the Florida side now competing against the Triumph in League One.

“Paul is a great professional that brings a lot of quality on and off the field,” said Harkes.

Clowes joins defenders Tyler Polak and Evan Lee and forward Jake Keegan on Triumph SC’s inaugural roster.
