Ahead of the inaugural 2019 USL Division III campaign, both South Georgia Tormenta FC and FC Tucson qualified for the 2018 Premier Development League Playoffs after impressive seasons.
FC Tucson clinched the Western Conference’s wildcard spot Saturday night, ending the regular season with a 7-3-4 record in the Mountain Division. Tormenta FC, meanwhile, finished the regular season with an undefeated 11-0-3 record – one of three teams in the 74-team league to complete the regular season unbeaten – and won the Deep South Division title.
"From the beginning of our franchise, goal No. 1 has been to win championships, and goal No. 2 was to win championships, and so was goal No. 3,” Tormenta FC President Darin Van Tassell told USLD3.com. “Because winning the Division title for the Deep South Division in the PDL was our first time achieving this goal, it brings great satisfaction to our players and fans. I believe we have the toughest division in the entire league, as the teams we played every night were certainly talented enough to win every match we competed in. This was championship won by an entire community, and we hope the playoffs bring more celebrations like this one to South Georgia."
Tormenta FC will host the Southern Conference Semifinals and Final at Erk Russell Athletic Park in Statesboro, Georgia. The SIMA Aguilas (Southeast Division winners) will face off against Brazos Valley Cavalry F.C. (Mid South Division winner) at 5 p.m. ET on Friday, while South Georgia will kick off against The Villages SC (wildcard) three hours later. The final is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET on Saturday.
FC Tucson will travel to Whittier, California, for the Western Conference Semifinals. Calgary Foothills FC (Northwest Division winner) plays the Colorado Rapids U23 (Mountain Division winners) at 4 p.m. PT on Friday, while Tucson takes on the FC Golden State Force (Southeast Division winner) three hours later. The final is scheduled for 7 p.m. PT on Saturday.
