DIII Founding Members Progress in U.S. Open Cup

Tormenta FC, FC Tucson win First Round matchups on Wednesday

The year keeps getting better and better for South Georgia Tormenta FC and FC Tucson, as both sides advanced to the Second Round of the 2018 U.S. Open Cup following wins on Wednesday.

After going down 1-0, Tormenta FC was able to score two second-half goals to cruise to a 2-1 victory against the Myrtle Beach Mutiny at North Myrtle Beach Sports Park in Little River, South Carolina. FC Tucson also won 2-1 in the First Round of the competition, defeating La Máquina FC at Kino North Stadium in Tucson, Arizona.

“We’d like to congratulate both FC Tucson and South Georgia Tormenta FC on their First Round wins on Wednesday,” USL Division III Senior Vice President Steven Short told USLD3.com. “Tucson continued its history of success in the competition, while Tormenta FC earned its first victory in the prestigious tournament. We look forward to seeing them face off against professional opponents in the USL next week.”

With the win, South Georgia will face off against the Charleston Battery at 7 p.m. ET on May 16, while Tucson travels to play Las Vegas Lights FC at 8 p.m. PT on the same day.

Named founding members of USL Division III earlier this year, Tormenta FC and FC Tucson are joined in the new professional league by Greenville Pro Soccer – announced as the third team in the league in March. Additional team announcements, as well as the official brand launch, are excepted to be revealed in the coming weeks and months.
