The clock was running out on Spokane Velocity FC’s season.
Deep in extra time against first-year upstart Portland Hearts of Pine, and trailing by a goal after Jay Tee Kamara’s finish for the visitors in the 92nd minute, the hosts needed to find a miracle to continue its bid for a second consecutive trip to the USL League One Final.
And then, as the game ticked into stoppage time, up stepped Nil Vinyals, whose goal in the 121st minute earned Velocity a 2-2 draw at ONE Spokane Stadium it would go on to turn into a 6-5 penalty shootout victory on a historic night in the Pacific Northwest.
For his performance, Vinyals has been selected as November’s Prinx Impact Sub of the Month, a new series highlighting key substitutions that have changed the course of a game this season.
Brought into the game with 11 minutes to play in regulation, Vinyals delivered another clutch performance. Having previously scored once after coming off the bench previously in the League One campaign, the Spaniard capitalized after a well-worked move began by fellow countryman Javier Martín and Marky Hernandez, who combined on the right to release Martín into the penalty area.
While a challenge spilled the ball loose in the box, Hernandez was first to react and claim possession. His low ball toward the penalty spot found Vinyals, who took one touch to control and a second to quickly sweep home a finish into the bottom-left corner to send the crowd into celebrations.

Vinyals was then tasked with the opening shot for Velocity in the ensuing shootout, a responsibility he handled with aplomb, starting a dramatic shootout that saw both clubs have penalties saved before Spokane came out on top after seven rounds.
“I’m still processing, honestly,” said Velocity Head Coach Leigh Veidman. “To be in this situation two weeks in a row is on some levels, frustrating, but on the other side of it is the heart, desire, fight and that never say die attitude these players bring. These players go out, execute and get it done and that’s huge. They’re absolutely incredible.”
