USL League One Playoffs Debutants Shine in Opening Weekend

TAMPA, Fla. – FC Naples and Portland Hearts of Pine made winning postseason debuts in the Quarterfinals of the 2025 USL League One Playoffs presented by Terminix on Saturday night and were joined by Players’ Shield winner and No. 1 seed One Knoxville SC and No. 3-seed Spokane Velocity FC in the Semifinals after a compelling opening weekend of the postseason.

Hearts of Pine delivered the biggest upset of the weekend as Ollie Wright’s goal sent the No. 7 seed to a 1-0 victory against No. 2-seed Chattanooga Red Wolves SC at CHI Memorial Stadium. Naples’ back-up goalkeeper Joel Serrano proved the hero for his side, meanwhile, making two saves in a penalty shootout against defending title-holder Union Omaha after coming on as a late substitute at the Paradise Coast Sports Complex.

The 2025 USL League One Playoffs presented by Terminix continue this weekend on ESPN+, with the Final scheduled on the weekend of November 14-16 on CBS Sports Golazo Network.

Quarterfinals
No. 1 One Knoxville SC 2, No. 8 Charlotte Independence 1

Players’ Shield winner One Knoxville SC claimed its first postseason victory in club history as goals by Sivert Haugli and Stavros Zarokostas earned victory against the Independence at Covenant Health Stadium. Kempes Tekiela provided the assists on both goals for the hosts, setting up Haugli for the opening goal in the 17th minute before Zarokostas doubled Knoxville’s lead midway through the second half. Charlotte pulled a goal back via Christian Chaney with 12 minutes to play, but the visitors were held at bay by a five-save performance by One Knox goalkeeper Sean Lewis.

No. 7 Portland Hearts of Pine 1, No. 2 Chattanooga Red Wolves SC 0

Portland Hearts of Pine continued its dream debut season as Ollie Wright scored the only goal and Hunter Morse recorded a nine-save shutout to defeat Chattanooga Red Wolves SC at CHI Memorial Stadium. Wright delivered the crucial blow 10 minute into the second half, playing a sharp give-and-go with Jake Keegan as he drifted in from the left before shooting low to the bottom-right corner. Morse ensured the goal would stand up as his defense also blocked a pair of shots to bring the Red Wolves’ season to an end.

No. 3 Spokane Velocity FC 1, No. 6 South Georgia Tormenta FC 1
Spokane Velocity FC advances 4-3 in a penalty shootout

Spokane Velocity FC’s Carlos Merancio made a key save in the fourth round of a penalty shootout while the hosts went 4 of 4 from the spot to advance against South Georgia Tormenta FC at ONE Spokane Stadium. After both teams had chances to open the scoring in regulation, Tormenta took the lead after Yaniv Bazini was brought down in the penalty area by Velocity’s David Garcia, allowing Mason Tunbridge to convert from the spot. Spokane hit back with a penalty kick of its own in the second period of extra time, however, as Anuar Pelaez shot home after a handball in the box with five minutes to go, leaving the game to be decided from the spot, where Merancio got the better of Tunbridge’s shot in the third round and Spokane kept its nerve to advance.

FC Naples advances 4-3 in a penalty shootout

FC Naples took advantage of becoming first club to host a USL League One Playoffs contest in its first season in the league as Joel Serrano recorded two saves in a penalty shootout after coming on as a late substitute in extra time. Both teams were thwarted across the 120 minutes with Naples starter Lalo Delgado recording a five-save performance and Omaha’s Rashid Nuhu a four-save display, but Serrano made his late entrance into the match count as he saved from Union youngster Mark Bronnik in the sixth round after Ian Garrett had converted to open the round to send Naples through.
