Since Mark McKeever became the interim Head Coach at South Georgia Tormenta FC in early August, only one club in USL League One has recorded more points – Portland Hearts of Pine, which we covered last week in this section and notched another win this weekend.
South Georgia’s 19 points in eight games, however, is a remarkable haul, with its current five-game winning streak the club’s longest since it was lifting the trophy at the League One Final three years ago under former Head Coach Ian Cameron.
Unsurprisingly, then, last week McKeever’s interim tag was removed, making him the second full-time Head Coach in Tormenta’s professional era.
At the center of the club’s improvement has been its attack, which has racked up 21 goals in the past eight games after its four-goal outburst against a struggling Richmond Kickers defense on Saturday night. The result not only moved Tormenta into seventh in the standings, but added to its cushion to the teams below the playoff line, putting the side on course for a trip to the postseason.
“I thought the performance wasn’t great tonight, but the special thing is you don’t play as well as you probably could have and you still get three points and you still score four goals,” McKeever told the Statesboro Herald’s Luke Martin. “We think we can outscore anybody.”
It’s a great thought, and Tormenta is certainly showing it can.
There should be a concern, though, as to whether this hot streak is sustainable over the final two months, because that’s what the underlying numbers say is happening here.
Tormenta’s 21 goals are second only to Union Omaha since McKeever’s appointment, but over that span the side ranks seventh in League One with a 12.74 Expected Goals mark, just above league average.
There’s more where that came from, too. Tormenta’s certainly improved under McKeever, but as John Morrissey pointed out in his deep dive into the club’s upturn it’s not proving as dominant game-in and game-out as its +10 goal differential would indicate. Just as with its attack, the defense is league average when it comes to defensive numbers, allowing 11.71 Expected Goals Against for a narrow +1.03 Expected Goal Differential.
Tormenta’s run has been great to watch, for sure, and it’s bringing out the best in a side that didn’t look like it was going to turn the corner in the manner it has.
We’d just be cautious as it stands that it will deliver against the league’s top clubs when it matters most.
Here are this week’s rankings.
