Greenville Triumph’s rally from an opening defeat earned a USL Jägermeister Cup reward

After the opening round of the 2025 USL Jägermeister Cup group stage, things weren’t looking great for Greenville Triumph SC.

Mired in what would become a six-game winless streak, Triumph’s 2-1 defeat to South Georgia Tormenta FC didn’t augur well for a visit to the Charleston Battery in Round 2 and the further narrowing of the path to get to the knockout stage.

But fortune has a funny way of turning around.

By all rights, the Battery should have won at Patriots Point. They outshot Greenville 15-2 and sported a 1.73-0.29 advantage in Expected Goals. Against the odds, Triumph prevailed with a 1-0 win, and in the Jägermeister Cup they’ve only gotten better since.

Back on home turf, Greenville made the most of its moments in a tightly-fought 2-0 victory against Miami FC as goalkeeper Seth Torman claimed Player of the Match honors with a seven-save shutout.

Then on Saturday night, Triumph put in its best performance of the stage to rally past FC Naples behind Rodrigo Robles’ pair of assists. With the Tampa Bay Rowdies unable to come through where Greenville had on the road against the Battery, Head Coach Rick Wright’s side advanced.

It’s up for question as to how far Triumph can advance with Indy Eleven up next in the Quarterfinals, but they’ve come this far. Who’s to say the road has to end here?

Here are this week’s rankings.

The scene at Hearts of Pine and the chemistry between Ollie Wright and Titus Washington was something to behold on Friday night. Five games without defeat in all competitions, now the wins need to start coming.
3 AV ALTA FC
(7-4-5)
Week 22: @ MAD
1
Last Week: 4
AV ALTA didn’t have anything to play for on Saturday night and still delivered a tremendous display to end Monterey Bay’s chances of advancement. Good work to bank away.
4 Greenville Triumph SC

Week 22: @ TRM
4
Last Week: 8
Greenville kept its cool and deserved its victory against FC Naples, now it gets to carry the League One flag into the USL Jägermeister Cup knockout stage.
5 Charlotte Independence
(7-4-5)
Week 22: @ KNX; vs TXO
2
Last Week: 7
Tumi Moshobane’s strike against Richmond showed the impact he can have for the Independence. Seeing Rafael Jauregui continue to shine brightly is also a really big plus.
6 One Knoxville SC
(6-2-5)
Week 22: vs. CLT; vs. POR
4
Last Week: 2
One Knox ran into a great goalkeeping display by Chattanooga’s Ricardo Jérez, but that’s still a disappointing result. Big game against Charlotte now on Wednesday night.
7 South Georgia Tormenta FC
(4-9-3)
Week 22: vs. GVL
3
Last Week: 10
Tormenta came this close to getting the results it needed to advance. Still, a comeback win against Miami FC is a positive they can take into the rest of the regular season.
8 Spokane Velocity FC
(8-3-5)
Week 22: vs. OMA
2
Last Week: 6
On another night, you could easily see Spokane getting a result against Sacramento Republic FC. There are positives to take despite the defeat.
9 Union Omaha
(4-8-2)
Week 22: @ SPK
3
Last Week: 12
Los Buhos got a good midweek victory against Texoma before falling to El Paso Locomotive on the weekend. Overall, we think this was a positive week for the side.
10 FC Naples
(6-5-5)
Week 22: @ RIC
1
Last Week: 9
Naples got an early lead but didn’t offer enough to withstand Greenville over the rest of the game, being completely dominated in the second half. Busy stretch starts on Saturday at Richmond.
11 Texoma FC
(5-6-5)
Week 22: @ CLT
6
Last Week: 5
Los Pajaros came down to earth with a bump over the past week. The Switchbacks’ finishing was just a different level and Texoma is going to have to shake that off before a tough trip to Charlotte.
12 Forward Madison FC
(3-5-7)
Week 22: vs. AV
1
Last Week: 11
The Flamingos gave it a go in Birmingham but couldn’t help out the other teams in the wild card chase. Time to take advantage of a run of five home games in the next six.
13 Westchester SC
(3-6-6)
Week 22: vs. CHA

Last Week: 13
Westchester wasn’t faring badly for most of the first half. The opening goal and red card to Noah Powder opened the floodgates for Detroit City for a result that could have been more lopsided.
14 Richmond Kickers
(4-8-4)
Week 22: @ NAP

Last Week: 14
The Kickers haven’t scored in four consecutive games across all competitions. That’s the first time that’s happened since the 2019 League One season.
