New kits engaged, Forward Madison finds its shooting boots in much-needed victory

Going into Saturday’s game against Greenville Triumph, things were not going well at Forward Madison FC.

The side was sitting on the bottom of the League One standings after four consecutive losses in league play, more than the Flamingos had lost in the entirety of the 2024 regular season campaign.

There were silver linings at hand. For one, the side had actually done a decent job of creating chances in its opening 12 games. The problem had been putting those opportunities away, having scored only nine goals in league play.

Debuting their new Alt Kits paying tribute to official Wisconsin Tartan – with the best shorts of any kit in the USL this season – things seemed to turn in the right direction.

The club’s 3-1 victory against Greenville marked the first time the Flamingos had scored three goals against professional opposition this season in all competitions, and finally broke the downturn.

“That was a good win today,” said FMFC striker Derek Gebhard, who scored the second goal of the night. “That felt like Forward Madison.” 

Now it’s up to the Flamingos to maintain their momentum with a run of games at Breese Stevens Field ahead. Wednesday night sees the Charlotte Independence come to town, a side Madison has held the upper hand on consistently over recent seasons. Then it’s South Georgia Tormenta FC, which is going through its own struggles of late.

The underlying numbers say Head Coach Matt Glaeser’s side should be a playoff team. Now it’s up to the players to prove it.

Last Week: 6		 The Red Wolves have rebounded well from their last setback with consecutive wins. This week’s games at home to Texoma and Spokane should be very interesting.

Last Week: 8		 Don’t tell Hearts of Pine nothing good happens after midnight. First road victory of the season against a hot Texoma side was fully deserved and pulled the side back into the playoff picture.

Last Week: 3		 Maybe the delays affected Los Pajaros on Saturday night, but they were second-best to Portland. Really tricky assignment heading to Chattanooga on Wednesday night up next.
6 One Knoxville SC

Last Week: 9		 A first comeback win of the season couldn’t have come at a better time for One Knox. Now it’s time to make a move up the standings with a run of games at Covenant Health Park.
7 Greenville Triumph SC

Last Week: 4		 The early goal and red card were too much for Greenville to overcome in Madison. It’s a setback, but this week’s a great opportunity to bounce back.
8 Charlotte Independence

Week 20: @ MAD; vs. POR 		3
Last Week: 5		 Second consecutive defeat for the Independence, who took the final 10 shots of the game against Omaha but were unable to overturn a two-goal deficit. Got to get in gear earlier.
9 FC Naples

Week 20: @ AV		 1
Last Week: 10		 Facing Westchester was exactly the tonic Naples needed after its recent winless run, and getting Karsen Henderlong back on the scoresheet was a very welcome sight.
10 Forward Madison FC
(2-5-6)
Week 20: vs. CLT		 2
Last Week: 12		 The Flamingos lived up to the look good, play good ideal. Those tartan shorts are absolutely dandy, expect we’ll see them again very soon after a good win against Greenville.
11 Union Omaha
(4-7-2)
Week 20: vs. TRM		 2
Last Week: 13		 Omaha had to hold on in Charlotte, but that’s a big step in the right direction for the defending title-holders. Need to keep that going against Tormenta on Friday night.
12 South Georgia Tormenta FC
(3-8-3)
Week 20: @ OMA		 5
Last Week: 7		 Tormenta didn’t feel like it got a good foothold in the game in the second half, and it ended up costing them against Knoxville. That’s a league-fewest five points from the past eight games.
13 Richmond Kickers
(4-7-4)
Week 20: @ GVL		 2
Last Week: 11		 Falling at home always stings, but when it’s one of your former players doing the damage, it hurts a little bit more. Kickers got that from Matt Bentley on Saturday.
14 Westchester SC
(2-6-5)
Week 20: vs. SPK; @ CHA
Last Week: 14		 Westchester has dropped 22 points from winning positions this season after its loss to FC Naples. That’s tied for the most in a League One season with 17 games still to go.
