Westchester SC’s fast starts, defensive collapses are becoming the club’s defining trait

By the numbers. there is no better attacking team in the opening 30 minutes of games in USL League One this season than Westchester SC.

With an attack led by Juan Carlos Obregón Jr., the first-year side has scored a league-best five times in the opening 15 minutes of games, and nine times before the half-hour mark. That’s more than 10 teams have scored this season in the first half overall.

And then? Well, that’s where it starts to go wrong.

There is no team worse defensively from the 31st minute on than WSC, which has conceded 19 goals from that point on to sit in last place in the League One standings.

All of that was on display in Sunday night’s visit from AV ALTA FC. Westchester made its customary fast start, scoring in consecutive minutes as Conor McGlynn and Jonathan Bolanos put home two excellent finishes to put the side 2-0 up in the 25th minute.

At that point, AV ALTA had recorded one shot, but the moment Jerry Desdunes’ lifted finish seven minutes before halftime got the visitors on the board, the game shifted the opposite direction. Antelope Valley’s four goals in the second half all came from prime positions in the center of the penalty area as Westchester’s defense buckled again.

The split means Westchester is on course for an unwelcome record one third of the way through its inaugural season. The side has now dropped 19 points from winning positions this season, only three points behind the single-season high of 22 points dropped by the Richmond Kickers in 2023.

And yet, the reality is if Westchester cut that number in half, it would be in contention for a top-four position in the League One standings. If this side can figure things out for the final hour of a game, all might not be lost, even as tough as things might seem right now.

Here’s where things stand this week.

Summary

1 Spokane Velocity FC
(7-1-4)
Week 16: @ RIC

Last Week: 1
Four-point week for Velocity at home was a good one after an evenly-played clash with the Independence and victory against Madison to remain on top of the pile.
2 Charlotte Independence
(7-2-3)
Week 16: @ TXO
1
Last Week: 3
After a cross-country flight in midweek, the Independence showed up looking sharp to take victory at home to Greenville on Sunday night. They’re not missing Luis Álvarez yet.
3 Chattanooga Red Wolves SC
(4-1-5)
Week 16: @ GVL
1
Last Week: 2
Comparing the chances the two sides created, the Red Wolves looked the more likely to come away with three points in Naples. Pedro Hernandez's four-game scoring streak is a real plus.
4 AV ALTA FC
(4-3-3)
Week 16: vs. POR
1
Last Week: 5
Antelope Valley have already been the comeback kings of League One with 10 points gained from losing positions this season, but racking up five straight goals against Westchester was another level of impressive.
5 Texoma FC
(3-5-3)
Week 16: vs. CLT
1
Last Week: 4
Texoma had to fight back twice but kept its undefeated streak going against Tormenta. Not the best display, but the side kept momentum.
6 Portland Hearts of Pine
(2-2-5)
Week 16: @ OMA
1
Last Week: 7
Take a bow, Ollie Wright. The first hat trick in Hearts of Pine history was a gem, with the third one of the best individual goals you might see this season. What a treat.
7 FC Naples
(5-3-4)
Week 16: ---
1
Last Week: 6
Naples is still in a solid position in the top three, but it needed to find another gear to create separation from the Red Wolves. There might be a nice rivalry forming here.
8 One Knoxville SC
(3-1-4)
Week 16: vs. TRM

Last Week: 8
We’d have preferred an evening with a sunset that adorns One Knox’s crest to the thunderstorms we got on Friday night, especially given we were getting a pretty compelling contest until it had to be called off.
9 Union Omaha
(3-5-2)
Week 16: ---

Last Week: 9
One step forward, one step back for Omaha this week, but there were good things to take away from both performances. Just got to be a little more decisive defensively.
10 Greenville Triumph SC
(2-6-4)
Week 16: vs. CHA

Last Week: 10
Triumph hasn’t scored in half of its 12 league games so far this regular season and has a league-fewest three points from its last eight games. Not great.
11 Forward Madison FC
(1-3-6)
Week 16: vs. WES

Last Week: 11
Madison had gotten a foothold on the road in Spokane on Saturday night before gifting an opportunity to Pierre Reedy. Paid a harsh price for that one.
12 Richmond Kickers
(3-5-4)
Week 16: vs. SPK

Last Week: 12
Early goal aside, the Kickers looked bright in Knoxville before the game was ultimately abandoned. They need to try and carry those ideas into Saturday’s game with Spokane.
13 South Georgia Tormenta FC
(2-6-2)
Week 16: @ KNX
1
Last Week: 14
Tormenta arguably had the better of the game against Texoma but couldn’t keep the hosts from rallying. Feels like a missed opportunity.
14 Westchester SC
(1-4-5)
Week 16: @ MAD
1
Last Week: 13
Westchester wishes games were 30 minutes long. It’s scored nine goals in the opening 30 minutes and conceded 19 from the 31st minute on, which is how you drop 19 points from winning positions in 10 games.
