Texoma’s fortunes have changed, moving the side above the playoff line after a third consecutive win

Finally, things are starting to move in Texoma FC’s favor.

After going without a win in its first two-and-a-half months as a club, the side has picked up three wins on the bounce in League One to suddenly be above the playoff line one-third of the way through the regular season.

So, what’s going right for Los Pájaros to cause this turnaround?

Well, having Javier Garcia between the sticks is certainly helping. The League One Player of the Month nominee has posted a save percentage of 86.7 percent since taking over from Mason McCready between the sticks, notching a -1.12 Goals Prevented mark and two shutouts while only allowing a pair of goals.

That’s been key, because Texoma’s continued to give up more chances than it has created over the past three game run. Including Saturday’s 2-1 win against the Richmond Kickers, the side has allowed 4.16 Expected Goals Against in its three wins, compared to 2.9 Expected Goals on the attacking side of the ledger.

The five tallies the side has put up have come on a hot run of finishing, with Texoma converting 27.8 percent of its shots and posting a 61.1 percent shot accuracy rate, both 10 percent above the club’s overall average this season.

There’s a lot to like about Texoma’s rise in the standings. It bears watching to see if they can sustain it as others continue to falter around them.

Here’s where things stand this week.

Summary

1 Spokane Velocity FC
(6-1-3)
Week 15: vs. CLT; vs. MAD

Last Week: 1
Velocity had the chances to take victory against AV ALTA but couldn’t convert. Nothing to be worried about, though, one third of the way through the season.
2 Chattanooga Red Wolves SC
(4-1-4)
Week 15: @ NAP

Last Week: 2
The Red Wolves are on a three-game winning streak in league play for the first time since the 2020 season and doing so while leaving possession to the other guys.
3 Charlotte Independence
(6-2-2)
Week 15: @ SPK; vs. GVL

Last Week: 3
Nice piece of work by the Independence to move Luis Alvarez on and have 2024 League One All-League selection Pedro Fonseca waiting in the wings, then cap the week with another win.
4 Texoma FC
(3-5-2)
Week 15: vs. TRM
5
Last Week: 9
Texoma is above the playoff line after a third consecutive victory. Who’d have thought that seven games into their season?
5 AV ALTA FC
(3-3-3)
Week 15: @ WES

Last Week: 5
Antelope Valley needed to put in a strong defensive display against Spokane, and delivered. Good point to move the club’s undefeated streak to four games in league play.
6 FC Naples
(5-3-3)
Week 15: vs. CHA

Last Week: 6
Karsen Henderlong’s early finish was classy, but Naples had won five out of six when scoring first previously this season and might have been fortunate to come away with a draw in Greenville.
7 Portland Hearts of Pine
(1-2-5)
Week 15: vs. OMA
3
Last Week: 4
Hearts of Pine didn’t play poorly in Chattanooga, but that defensive turnover that led to the Red Wolves’ winner will sting a bit. Tough way for the undefeated run to end.
8 One Knoxville SC
(3-1-4)
Week 15: vs. RIC
1
Last Week: 7
Knoxville looked up against it down a player and a goal in Westchester and ended up almost grabbing victory through Kimarni Smith in stoppage time. Bit of a roller coaster ride.
9 Union Omaha
(2-4-2)
Week 15: vs. GVL; @ POR
5
Last Week: 14
Isidro Martinez’s goal from the center circle rightly landed on ESPN’s SportsCenter Top 10. Maybe that’s the spark Los Buhos need to start their move up the standings.
10 Greenville Triumph SC
(2-4-4)
Week 15: @ OMA; @ CLT

Last Week: 10
Triumph drop below the playoff line, but their performance against Naples was encouraging again. Need to find a way to get back in the win column, though.
11 Forward Madison FC
(1-2-6)
Week 15: @ SPK
3
Last Week: 8
The attack looked as promising as it has this season against Omaha, while the defense looked as shaky as it has this season. We’re still not sure what to make of this group.
12 Richmond Kickers
(3-5-4)
Week 15: @ KNX
1
Last Week: 11
The Kickers hadn’t lost after scoring first since late in the 2023 season before Saturday night’s defeat to Texoma. The chances were there, but the finishing wasn’t.
13 Westchester SC
(1-3-4)
Week 15: vs. AV

Last Week: 13
Another two points dropped, this time after going ahead and having a man-advantage in the second half. At least Josh Drack made the clearance off the line to preserve a point in the end.
14 South Georgia Tormenta FC
(2-6-1)
Week 15: @ TXO
2
Last Week: 12
Tormenta’s lost four in a row to drop to the bottom of the standings. It’s the first time that’s happened since the 2021 campaign, and they’re 0-6-0 when conceding first this year.
