Hearts of Pine’s attacking breakthrough offers hope for rise in League One standings

Let it not be said we’ve lacked faith in Portland Hearts of Pine.

In fact, for a team with one win in league play so far this season, we might have been overly enamored by the first-year side’s underlying numbers compared to its actual results.

Which means when they finally put up the sort of attacking display they’ve shown the potential to deliver in Saturday’s 4-2 victory against Detroit City FC – the first time Le Rouge have conceded four goals in a game against an opponent from the USL since last May – we’re going to feel at least a little bit vindicated.

Were there flaws in the result at Fitzpatrick Stadium? Yes, and the combination of a seven-save performance by goalkeeper Kash Oladapo aided by some profligate finishing by DCFC showed where Portland still has to improve defensively.

“We know that they have some quality players over there, and so whenever you’re able to get a stop, you just kind of got to reflect,” said Oladapo. “I mean, if I have to make a save, maybe something broke down. So, I can’t always celebrate too much, but everyone in the back line put in shifts.”

The creativity shown by Trinidad and Tobago international Natty James and fellow playmaker Jay Tee Kamara, however, alongside the side’s finishing was exactly the sort of result that should build confidence in Portland.

Now undefeated in its past five games, there are some good tests to come for Hearts of Pine, including this weekend against Chattanooga Red Wolves.

After the buzz around their launch, the results could start to catch up quickly.

Here’s where things stand this week.

Summary

1 Spokane Velocity FC
(6-1-2)
Week 14: @ AV

Last Week: 1
Spokane had all the chances it needed to at least force a shootout against Monterey Bay and squandered them. It’s going to be an uphill climb to get out of the group from here, which is a shame.
2 Chattanooga Red Wolves SC
(3-1-4)
Week 14: @ POR

Last Week: 2
The Red Wolves are undefeated in their last four games after their shootout victory against Forward Madison. Needed to win in regulation to have a chance at the top two, though.
3 Charlotte Independence
(5-2-2)
Week 14: @ TRM
2
Last Week: 5
Heck of a comeback by the Independence to secure two points against Lexington SC and sit in second place in Group 5. Next month’s showdown with first-place Loudoun should be good.
4 Portland Hearts of Pine
(1-1-5)
Week 14: @ CHA
3
Last Week: 7
They didn’t score the goals, but the way Jay Tee Kamara and Natty James showed their creativity against Detroit City was a joy. More of that and they’ll be zipping up League One.
5 AV ALTA FC
(3-3-2)
Week 14: vs. SPK
1
Last Week: 4
It’s a shame AV ALTA was officially eliminated from USL Jägermeister Cup contention on Saturday after its comeback against Oakland. The Hangar continues to be a tough place for opponents to visit.
6 FC Naples
(5-3-2)
Week 14: @ GVL
3
Last Week: 3
Naples couldn’t hold on against Miami in the second half and now is going to need help to progress in Group 6. Things still look wide open, though, and that July 4 game against Tampa Bay should be fun.
7 One Knoxville SC
(3-1-3)
Week 14: @ WES
1
Last Week: 6
After a week off, it’s time for One Knox to get back into gear as they head to Westchester and try to close the gap to Spokane.
8 Forward Madison FC
(1-1-6)
Week 14: vs. OMA

Last Week: 8
The Flamingos have drawn five consecutive outings across all competitions after its shootout loss to the Red Wolves. It’s time to break out in the Battle of the Birds against Omaha.
9 Texoma FC
(2-5-2)
Week 14: @ RIC

Last Week: 9
Texoma got a bye this week after its consecutive victories. We’re intrigued to see how it fares as it looks for a first road win against the Richmond Kickers on Saturday.
10 Greenville Triumph SC
(2-4-3)
Week 14: vs. NAP
4
Last Week: 14
Is Greenville’s victory against the Charleston Battery likely repeatable? Probably not, and that’s what makes it all the more glorious.
11 Richmond Kickers
(3-4-4)
Week 14: vs. TXO
1
Last Week: 10
The Kickers got a stellar display in net by Pablo Jara but couldn’t get past North Carolina’s Trevor Mulqueen at the other end. Time to pick up the league form.
12 South Georgia Tormenta FC
(2-5-1)
Week 14: vs. TRM
1
Last Week: 11
At one point on Saturday night, Tormenta was on top of the Group 6 standings. It’s still got a chance to end up there, but next month’s game with Charleston is crucial.
13 Westchester SC
(1-3-4)
Week 14: vs. KNX
1
Last Week: 12
Same old story for Westchester SC, stake yourself to a lead and then let it slip away. Nice outing for JC Obregon Jr. against his former club at least.
14 Union Omaha
(1-4-2)
Week 14: @ MAD
1
Last Week: 13
Omaha got a week off to try and figure things out. We still think they’re going to be OK, the underlying numbers are solid, but results need to start arriving soon.
