Chattanooga Red Wolves’ possession numbers are an outlier, but they’re making it work

It’s fair to say the past two seasons haven’t offered a great deal for Chattanooga Red Wolves SC fans to get excited about.

Yes, there were the exploits of Ropapa Mensah in front of goal as he took on the mantle of Juan Galindrez, but the side averaged fewer than a point-per-game in each of the past two regular seasons and finished last in its USL Jägermeister Cup group.

This season, things have started to move in a different direction.

There was, of course, the epic U.S. Open Cup victory against crosstown rival Chattanooga FC to celebrate and now the side has reeled off its first run of three victories in four league contests since the 2022 season after a 2-1 win on the road against South Georgia Tormenta FC this past Saturday.

The Red Wolves’ success is coming in a pretty unique way, too.

At present, Chattanooga’s average of 36.4 percent of possession is comfortably on track to be the lowest by any club in a League One regular season – fellow top-four side FC Naples is second on that list currently at 43.1 percent – but while that number might be an outlier, it’s not necessarily an ineffective way of finding success. Just look at San Antonio FC when it won the Players’ Shield and league title in 2022.

What the Red Wolves are doing instead is making life difficult for opponents in their penalty area and being efficient in finishing when they create their chances at the other end, ranking third in the league with a 19 percent shot conversion rate. If it can sustain that level, the side can sustain its push up the standings.

Last Week: 6		 Seven of the 11 points AV ALTA has earned this season have come after conceding the opening goal. That sort of resilience is impressive, even if we’d like a little more control.
5 Charlotte Independence

Last Week: 2		 The Independence’s winning streak is over after their late defeat against Antelope Valley. They can’t let that get them down as they host Lexington on Saturday in the USL Jägermeister Cup.
6 One Knoxville SC

Last Week: 3		 One Knox couldn’t quite get going in attack against Indy Eleven on Saturday. That leaves them in a tough spot to advance to the USL Jägermeister Cup knockout stage.
7 Portland Hearts of Pine

Last Week: 4		 Probably a fair enough result to pick up a point at Madison, that’s four games undefeated in league play but with only one win and ground to make up at home.
8 Forward Madison FC

Last Week: 5		 The four best scoring chances Madison created on Saturday against Portland were from set pieces. That’s not a terrible thing, but we want to see a bit more in open play.
9 Texoma FC

Last Week: 11		 Two wins on the bounce for Texoma thanks to the late winner from Teddy Baker. This squad really has turned the corner and is knocking on the door of the top eight.
10 Richmond Kickers
(3-4-4)
Week 13: vs. NC		 1
Last Week: 9		 The Kickers keep showing resilience but that’s six games without a win in league play to keep the side treading water in the standings.
11 South Georgia Tormenta FC
(2-5-1)
Week 13: @ TBR		 1
Last Week: 10		 Three consecutive defeats for Tormenta as the defensive struggles continue. They’ve still only recorded one shutout so far in the league this season.
12 Westchester SC
(1-3-4)
Week 13: vs. HFD		 2
Last Week: 14		 Westchester has dropped 14 points from winning positions already this season. To put that in context, only three teams had a higher total than that in the entire 2024 League One season.
13 Union Omaha
(1-4-2)
Week 13: ---		 1
Last Week: 12		 This isn’t the longest run without a win in league play in Omaha’s history, but there’s an awful lot that needs to get fixed in short order to get the side back where it’s typically been.
14 Greenville Triumph SC
(2-4-3)
Week 13: @ CHS		 1
Last Week: 13		 Greenville posted its lowest shot total in a league game this season (8) and then got gut-punched at the end in Texoma to continue its winless run.
