Naples, Spokane continue to show credentials, but we’re making a change at the top

Five games into their second season, it’s becoming clear Spokane Velocity has taken a positive step forward. The side’s 4-1 victory against Texoma was the second four-goal display Velocity has put up this year, and there was little complacency in the performance.

“We worked all week. We knew how they were going to come out and play, so we just executed,” said Grenada international Shavon John-Brown, who contributed a goal and assist. “It’s a convincing win and important moving forward.”

What we’re seeing out of Spokane is impressive. The side leads the league with an average of 1.87 Expected Goals per 90 minutes, a rise from a season ago, and it’s also dropped its Expected Goals Against mark to 0.97 per 90 minutes.

Despite that, over here at League One Power Rankings central, we’re making a change at the top.

Yes, it’s FC Naples’ time.

As you’ll remember, we had questions going into this season about how this was all going to fit together. Sitting as one of the two remaining undefeated teams in the league, all of those have been answered confidently on the field. Naples is also no slouch when it comes to underlying numbers. Through six games it has a league best +5.39 Expected Goal Differential – not quite as large as its actual +7 mark, but in some ways more impressive.

Coming through with another victory against the Richmond Kickers before a weekend-high crowd of 4,005 fans, Naples is now five points clear at the top one-fifth of the way through its inaugural regular season.

“You could tell that, as a team, we were ready to go,” said defender Julian Cisneros. “It was probably one of our most solid performances of the year. I think we just blocked all the noise out, all the outside factors, and just took care of business. We were ready to go.”

Here’s where things stand this week.

Summary

1 FC Naples
(4-0-2)
Week 7: vs. KNX
2
Last Week: 3
Naples continues to rack up the wins and pull in the crowds. Really good value for its victory against Richmond on Saturday night to shift up to top spot in the rankings.
2 Spokane Velocity FC
(2-1-2)
Week 7: @ AV
1
Last Week: 1
Velocity didn’t put up four goals in a game once in its inaugural season. Now they’ve done it twice in their first five games of 2025. That’s a step forward.
3 One Knoxville SC
(2-0-1)
Week 7: @ NAP
1
Last Week: 2
As many good chances as One Knox carved out against Greenville, their victory could have come by a wider margin. Very positive signs here.
4 AV ALTA FC
(2-2-0)
Week 7: vs. SPK
2
Last Week: 6
Tell you what, The Hangar is starting to build a good aura around AV ALTA. Another late win before a strong home crowd keeps the side rolling up the standings.
5 Westchester SC
(1-1-1)
Week 7: @ RIC
2
Last Week: 7
No game this week for Westchester, but two of the teams above them in the rankings fell, so here we are. We’re curious about how they fare in Detroit on Wednesday.
6 Greenville Triumph SC
(2-2-1)
Week 7: @ CHA
1
Last Week: 5
The Triumph have played one-third of their home regular season games and have seven points to show for it. Going to need to get things going on the road, looks like.
7 Richmond Kickers
(3-3-0)
Week 7: vs. WES
4
Last Week: 11
One up and one down over the week, and in fairness it’s about what the Kickers deserved from the two performances. Got to start figuring out a way to string results together.
8 Union Omaha
(1-2-0)
Week 7: ---
4
Last Week: 4
Yes, Max Schneider hit the woodwork, but we’re not sure Omaha can have too many complaints about its loss to Richmond last midweek. Time to get your shooting boots on, lads.
9 Charlotte Independence
(1-1-2)
Week 7: vs. TRM
1
Last Week: 10
As dominant as the Independence were in the second half against Madison, giving up a late equalizer on the only shot you faced in the half is not how you see things out.
10 Forward Madison FC
(1-1-1)
Week 7: vs. TXO
2
Last Week: 8
The Flamingos are still having some issues putting it all together in the final third. Thank goodness for Nazeem Bartman’s first league goal since 2023.
11 South Georgia Tormenta FC
(2-2-1)
Week 7: @ CLT
2
Last Week: 13
Yes, Tormenta took victory against Hearts of Pine on Saturday, but it wasn’t exactly convincing. Still, you need to take advantage of the breaks when they come.
12 Portland Hearts of Pine
(0-1-2)
Week 7: ---
3
Last Week: 9
Tough one for Hearts of Pine, who forgot the most important lesson. When you’ve dominated and found an equalizer, you can’t let your guard down for a moment.
13 Chattanooga Red Wolves SC
(0-1-3)
Week 7: vs. GVL
1
Last Week: 12
Matt Bentley and Omar Hernandez are doing their best to provide the goals, but the Red Wolves have got to stop leaking defensively if they’re going to contend.
14 Texoma FC
(0-4-0)
Week 7: @ MAD

Last Week: 14
This is starting to get pretty rough for Texoma, especially compared to some of their expansion counterparts. The big names like Solomon Asante just aren’t firing.
