USL League One Power Rankings – Week 5

FC Naples continues to make all the right moves, with Karsen Henderlong leading the way

Officially there are still four teams undefeated in USL League One at the end of Week 5.

There are, of course, caveats to that. One of those sides – One Knoxville SC – has only played two league games, while Chattanooga Red Wolves SC and Portland Hearts of Pine have been draw specialists in the league, each taking a point from each of their early-season contests.

FC Naples, though? They’re five games in and looking like the real deal, and it’s not just the standings telling you that. Saturday’s 3-0 win against fellow expansion side Texoma FC was the third league win of the campaign for Head Coach Matt Poland’s side as Karsen Henderlong continued to shine with his fourth goal of the league campaign.

What’s more, everything we have in terms of the club’s underlying numbers say this is sustainable in the weeks to come. Naples has been effective in the attacking end of the field with a 5.97 Expected Goals mark for its seven tallies, but the club’s defense has been outstanding.

Allowing only one goal is something, but what Naples is doing to limit clear looks on net for its opponents is another. The side is allowing only 0.53 Expected Goals Against per 90 minutes, a number only marginally bettered by One Knoxville (0.51) in its two games.

We’ll get to see those two teams square off in Week 7, part of a couple of fun weeks ahead for the side that include visits from the Tampa Bay Rowdies in the U.S. Open Cup on April 16 and the Charleston Battery in the USL Jägermeister Cup on April 26.

We’re definitely curious to see how Naples and its support steps up over the remainder of this month.

Last Week: 4		 Omaha’s trip to Richmond on Wednesday night should be an opportunity to build momentum before what should be a very tasty Open Cup game at home to San Antonio FC.
5 Greenville Triumph SC
(2-1-1)
Week 6: vs. KNX		 1
Last Week: 6		 It would definitely have been disappointing for Greenville to not come away with all three points after its performance against Charlotte. Big goal for Leo Castro to deliver late.
6 AV ALTA FC

Week 6: vs. CHA		 6
Last Week: 12		 The Hangar was rocking all week between AV ALTA’s wins in the Open Cup and in its inaugural home opener. That’s going to be a great homefield advantage moving forward.
7 Westchester SC
(1-1-1)
Week 6: ---		 4
Last Week: 3		 That was a little step back for Westchester. Lots of shots against AV ALTA, but not clean enough with its finishing, exemplified by Daniel Bouman’s early miss.
8 Forward Madison FC
(1-1-0)
Week 6: @ CLT 		1
Last Week: 7		 After being knocked out of the Open Cup, Madison gets back on the horse this Friday night in Charlotte. They’ve won four of the past five meetings between the clubs and need to continue that trend.
9 Portland Hearts of Pine
(0-0-2)
Week 6: @ TRM		 1
Last Week: 10		 Portland had to hang on for a point in Spokane but give Hearts of Pine credit for doing so after its remarkable upset of Hartford Athletic in midweek.
10 Charlotte Independence
(1-1-1)
Week 6: vs. MAD		 2
Last Week: 8		 The Independence didn’t give away a lot defensively but eventually got found out by Triumph. There just didn’t seem to be enough cutting edge.
11 Richmond Kickers
(2-2-0)
Week 6: vs. OMA; @ NAP		 2
Last Week: 9		 Two-game week for the Kickers, and two pretty good tests in a home clash with Union Omaha and a visit to FC Naples. We could learn a lot about this side.
12 Chattanooga Red Wolves SC
(0-0-3)
Week 6: @ AV		 1
Last Week: 13		 The Red Wolves claimed a thriller in the Open Cup and then rallied twice for a point against Tormenta. It’s certainly not boring.
13 South Georgia Tormenta FC
(1-2-1)
Week 6: vs. POR		 2
Last Week: 11		 Tormenta will be disappointed to have let the opportunity for a road win slip away in Chattanooga. That’s 11 goals conceded in five games across all competitions now.
14 Texoma FC
(0-3-0)
Week 6: @ SPK
Last Week: 14		 Texoma tried to battle back after going down by a pair of goals early in the second half against fellow expansion side FC Naples, but it was always going to be a big ask from there.
