Westchester is living up to early billing, showing balance and quality in first showings

Between the quality of the squad the side had put together, including multiple senior internationals, and the pedigree of first-time Head Coach Dave Carton, we had Westchester SC pegged as the most likely immediate contender among League One’s expansion clubs this season.

Three games into the club’s history, they’re living up to the billing.

Saturday night’s 3-1 victory on the road against a fellow expansion side was comprehensive, with Texoma’s goal coming on the only shot the hosts registered on target compared to the six shots on target Westchester delivered, including a stellar strike from Conor McGlynn before the side pulled away in the second half.

“A solid effort all around for our team,” said Carton postgame. “Any time you can win on the road it means a great deal, and now we have to keep the momentum going with both U.S. Open Cup and another road match coming up.”

Having already picked up a road point at Greenville Triumph in its inaugural league contest and victory on the road in the Open Cup against FC Motown – a contest the side probably should have won more handily than the 1-0 scoreline indicated – things are moving nicely.

As April’s home opener against Rhode Island FC in the USL Jägermeister Cup gets closer, the excitement should be building about what this team can become in short order.

Here’s where things stand this week.

Summary

1 Spokane Velocity FC
(1-1-1)
Week 5: v. POR
5
Last Week: 6
Velocity’s first four-goal away game in league play was an impressive all-around performance, and Luis Gil will be kicking himself for not bagging the first hat trick in club history.
2 One Knoxville SC
(1-0-1)
Week 5: ---

Last Week: 2
Knoxville’s got a bit of an awkward early-season schedule, which is why they’re here this week instead of No. 1. The unwritten rule of Power Rankings? You have to play to move up.
3 Westchester SC
(1-0-1)
Week 5: @ AV
1
Last Week: 4
Conor McGlynn doesn’t score a lot of goals, but they tend to be impressive when he does. Nice strike to set Westchester on the way to a good road victory at Texoma.
4 Union Omaha
(1-1-0)
Week 5: ---
1
Last Week: 5
That was much more like it from the defending title-holders, whose only blot on the copybook was an own goal. Good momentum into Wednesday’s Open Cup clash with Des Moines.
5 FC Naples
(2-0-2)
Week 5: @ TXO
2
Last Week: 3
Naples’ clash with Portland Hearts of Pine wasn’t a thriller but spoke to the defensive foundation this side has built. They’re only allowing 0.51 Expected Goals per game through four outings in the league.
6 Greenville Triumph SC
(1-1-1)
Week 5: vs. CLT
5
Last Week: 1
Greenville paid the price for giving up too many Grade “A” chances to Spokane on Saturday night. Going to have to clean that up against Knoxville in the Open Cup.
7 Forward Madison FC
(1-1-0)
Week 5: ---
2
Last Week: 9
The Henny Derby delivered its regular level of chaos, and out of it Derek Gebhard emerged the hero. That gives him four in the series all-time, trailing only Emiliano Terzaghi.
8 Charlotte Independence
(1-0-1)
Week 5: @ GVL
1
Last Week: 7
Solid point and a shutout for the Independence, but we were honestly hoping for a little bit more on home turf.
9 Richmond Kickers
(2-2-0)
Week 5: ---
1
Last Week: 8
You could make a good argument the Kickers deserved something out of the Henny Derby beyond Darwin Espinal’s excellent finish. Tough one for the hosts before another terrific crowd.
10 Portland Hearts of Pine
(0-0-1)
Week 5: @ SPK
1
Last Week: 11
Hearts of Pine didn’t show off the attacking fluidity we saw in the Open Cup in Naples, but a point on the road in your first league game is nothing to sniff at.
11 South Georgia Tormenta FC
(1-2-0)
Week 5: @ CHA
1
Last Week: 10
Given what we’ve seen so far this season in attack from Tormenta, that was a bit of a letdown. Can’t afford to misfire against a solid amateur squad in Foro SC in midweek.
12 AV ALTA FC
(0-2-0)
Week 5: vs. WES

Last Week: 12
AV ALTA is going to welcome a sellout crowd to its league home opener this weekend but first it’s got to get through a tricky game in the Open Cup against LAFC II.
13 Chattanooga Red Wolves SC
(0-0-2)
Week 5: v. TRM

Last Week: 13
The Red Wolves held firm for their first shutout since last September, going to need that same level of organization this week in the Open Cup.
14 Texoma FC
(0-2-0)
Week 5: vs. NAP

Last Week: 14
Texoma’s opening goal was beautifully executed. The loss was disappointing, but hopefully the side can keep progressing with more of that quality.
