Greenville Triumph SC earned a 3-0 victory against Union Omaha on Wednesday night at Paladin Stadium to earn its first victory of the 2025 USL League One season as Leo Castro notched two goals and an assist and Ben Zadowski had a goal and assist.

Here are three things we took away from the contest.

1. TRIUMPH BREAK THE STREAK

Greenville Triumph SC has been one of League One’s perennial contenders – the only team to reach the postseason in each campaign of the league’s existence – but of late they’d been unable to solve Union Omaha. Los Buhos had taken four consecutive victories in the series, and had an eight-game undefeated streak that dated to the 2022 season across the regular season and playoffs going into Wednesday night’s clash, a run Triumph ended in emphatic fashion.

On paper, there was a good amount to like about Omaha’s performance. The visitors had more possession, got into the attacking third more consistently, and recorded more shots than Triumph, but Greenville’s execution made the difference, putting five shots on target to Omaha’s one and creating better clear-cut chances overall. That ended up being the difference as Omaha was unable to capitalize on the chances it made while Triumph made the most of theirs.

2. CASTRO, ZAKOWSKI HAVE CAREER NIGHTS

The attacking credentials of Greenville’s Leo Castro and Ben Zakowski have previously been established – Castro sits second in Triumph history to Lyam MacKinnon in goals while Zakowski had a breakout season with seven assists across league and Jagermeister Cup play in 2024 – but each had arguably the best games so far in Greenville on Wednesday night.

Castro’s two goals and one assist was an individual high in goal contributions in League One play, and Zakowski’s one goal and one assist performance was the first time the 24-year-old had registered multiple goal contributions in a game. (Zadowski arguably should have had his first multi-goal game in the league, too, only to stray offside seven minutes into the second half.)

With MacKinnon having moved on this offseason, there was the question of how Triumph would fill that gap. Between Castro’s impressive work as the lone striker and Zadowski’s creativity there’s a clear path forward for the side between two players who can maintain the side’s attacking presence this season. The duo certainly should have impressed Triumph supporting owner Ronaldinho as he looked on from the stands.

3. GETTING TO KNOW YOU

For Union Omaha on Wednesday night, it was a far cry from the side we had hailed as potentially the best in League One’s history. And you know what? It’s not going to make the result and loss of The Belt to one of their rivals feel any better, but you might have seen this coming as soon as the team sheets came out.

From the lineup that started last year’s League One Final victory against Spokane Velocity FC, only four players remained in the lineup in Greenville, with new faces like Brent Kallman and Isidro Martinez seeing their first action for the club. As mentioned earlier, there were part of this game that were positive for Los Buhos, and as the side sharpens up – and gets the likes of Lagos Kunga and Joe Gallardo ready for 90 minutes – we’ll likely see more of what we expect from the preseason title favorites.

On Wednesday night, Omaha looked like a team that was still figuring a few things out, and one that hadn’t had the opportunity Greenville had to play its first live action of the regular season. We’ll need to see a few more outings like this before we start getting concerned.
