USL League One Power Rankings – Week 1

The limited-release opening weekend gave us positive starts for both League One’s debutants

Call it a limited-release opening weekend.

The three-game slate to open the new League One campaign did at least give us a few insights as to what we might be ahead this season, especially for the two newcomers we saw in action.

And for both Westchester SC and FC Naples, full marks for a positive start.

In Westchester’s case, the early penalty kick – as soft as it looked – came via some nice interplay, and the way the side ended the game in putting up the last six efforts on goal showed the way the side grew into itself as its first competitive game went on.

The high expectations the roster build produced were delivered on well enough on first viewing.

For Naples, meanwhile, the intensity of the action – including the late-game coming together with Chattanooga Red Wolves SC – showed the energy the club was able to generate off a tremendous sellout crowd. The hosts deserved a result and can now build from here.

We’ll get another debut this week as AV ALTA FC heads to face South Georgia Tormenta FC, while last year’s finalists Union Omaha and Spokane Velocity FC give us a look at where they stand coming into the new season.

Last Week: 2		 Spokane was solid, but not spectacular at ONE Spokane Stadium last season. To be a serious contender, that’s going to have to improve, starting on Sunday against Knoxville.

Last Week: 3		 Before Saturday night’s game against FC Naples, the Flock should check out the Flamingos at Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens. Nothing better to get into gameday mode.
4 Westchester SC

Week 2: ---
Last Week: 4		 Going on the road to Greenville for your first game was a test, and Westchester passed by earning a draw. We liked how they grew into the game, especially in the second half performance.
5 One Knoxville SC

Week 2: @ SPK
Last Week: 5		 One Knoxville has earned victory in each of its prior two season openers in USL League One. That’s a good omen for new Head Coach Ian Fuller’s first game at the helm.
6 Greenville Triumph SC

Week 2: v. OMA
Last Week: 3		 There was a lot to like about Greenville’s first game without some key departures, but the lack of a closing kick – no shots in the final 30 minutes – meant it didn’t result in a victory.
7 Richmond Kickers

Week 2: @ CLT		 3
Last Week: 10		 There are parts of the Kickers’ performance that you can pick apart if you want – and Charlotte was likely paying close attention – but in terms of fun and alertness, that was a great way to start the season.
8 AV ALTA FC

Last Week: 7		 Showtime for AV ALTA FC as it heads across the country for its League One debut on Saturday night. Who’s your pick to score the first goal in club history?
9 Charlotte Independence

Week 2: v. RIC		 1
Last Week: 8		 The Independence kick off their 11th season on Saturday night with a solid identity, but new pieces in attack. We’re curious as to how it meshes together for Head Coach Mike Jeffries.
10 South Georgia Tormenta FC

Week 2: v. AV		 1
Last Week: 9		 Overall, Friday’s result might have been a little harsh on Tormenta, but they’re going to have to be sharper defensively to pick up situations before they develop into serious problems.
11 FC Naples

Week 2: v. MAD		 2
Last Week: 13		 Well played, Andrés Ferrín, first goalscorer in FC Naples history. What a great sight on Saturday night, and a result the hosts certainly deserved before a bigger test this weekend.
12 Chattanooga Red Wolves SC

Last Week: 14		 Don’t mind us, we’re just over here watching Omar Hernandez’s goal on repeat. The Red Wolves are going to need to offer more overall, though.
13 Portland Hearts of Pine

Last Week: 11		 The waiting’s almost over, Hearts of Pine fans. Hope you’ve got your tickets for the season now, because it sounds like they’re already in short supply.
14 Texoma FC

Last Week: 12		 Sorry, Texoma fans, but we had to give the teams that played this weekend something for the effort. You’ll get your chance to shine soon enough.
