PORTLAND, Maine - Portland Hearts of Pine today announced the signing of 27-year-old Japanese midfielder Masashi Wada, pending league and federation approval.

A native of Yokohama, Japan, Wada developed in the academy of J1 League side Yokohama F. Marinos between 2010-15. Wada made his professional debut with Marinos' first team in 2016, totaling five appearances across J.League Cup, J1 League and Emperor's Cup play.

On a pair of loan stints from Marinos, Wada made 17 appearances with J2 League side Renofa Yamaguchi FC in 2017 and 31 appearances with J3 League side Blaublitz Akita in 2019. He made an additional five appearances for Yokohama in 2018.

Wada left Yokohama F. Marinos in 2020, joining SC Sagamihara and helping the club earn promotion to the J2 League for the 2021 season. In two seasons with Sagamihara, Wada totaled 55 appearances, six goals and three assists.

Between 2021-23, Wada played for Iwate Grulla Morioka in both the J2 League and J3 League. Through 84 appearances with the club, Wada recorded 18 goals and four assists. The midfielder most recently spent the 2024 J2 League season with Thespa Gunma, providing three goal contributions in 28 appearances.

In 2016, Wada earned three caps and scored one goal for Japan's U-19 national team.
