LANCASTER, Calif. - AV ALTA FC today announced the signing of 20-year-old Philippines international midfielder Javier Mariona, pending league and federation approval. The Los Altos, Calif. native joins the expansion side on his first professional contract having previously appeared with Oakland Roots SC and Central Valley Fuego FC on USL Academy contracts.
Mariona developed with MVLA Soccer Club and Red Star Soccer Academy before joining the San Jose Earthquakes Academy early in his career. In 2021, he joined USL Championship side Oakland Roots SC on a USL Academy contract.
He made his professional debut with the Roots in August 2021, becoming the youngest player to appear for Oakland in club history at 16 years, 10 months and 12 days old. Mariona made one additional appearance with Oakland in the 2022 USL Championship season.
After spending time with various lower-division sides - Project 51O, De Anza Force Soccer Club, Laredo Heat SC and Des Moines Menace - Mariona returned to the professional ranks on a USL Academy contract, this time in USL League One with Central Valley Fuego FC in 2024. Across all competitions with Fuego FC, Mariona made 20 appearances and scored three goals.
Mariona made six appearances for El Salvador's U-20 national team in the 2022 Concacaf Under-20 Championship, providing a brace against Aruba. In December 2024, the 20-year-old switched his allegiance to the Philippines, making his senior national team debut in the 2024 ASEAN Championship and registering six appearances.
