RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond Kickers today announced the signing of 27-year-old German midfielder Nils Seufert, pending league and federation approval.
The box-to-box midfielder brings a winning pedigree and an honest, hardworking engine to the Kickers midfield. A veteran of high-level clubs and coaches, Seufert adds to a potent attack while complementing the current Kickers core.
"Nils came to us from a friend overseas with a great knowledge of USL League One. His ability to cover ground, set up opportunities, and his commitment to doing the hard work off the ball make him a valuable asset that we are pleased to add to the Richmond Kickers," Richmond Chief Sporting Officer and Head Coach Darren Sawatzky said. "His experience in Europe will give us another high-level leader and his demeanor around teammates is a beacon in our locker room."
As a youth player, Seufert cut his teeth with SV Waldhof Mannheim and SC 1910 Käfertal Mannheim before moving toward a professional career that garnered exposure and competition throughout the German football landscape.
After moving to their youth academy as a 14-year-old and excelling in their U21s and reserve team, Seufert made his full professional debut for 1. FC Kaiserslautern in the fall of 2017. After featuring for the first team at 1. FC Kaiserslautern 21 times, Seufert moved to DSC Arminia Bielefeld. At Bielefeld, he earned the opportunity to hone his level with the best in German football, as the Blues won the 2. Bundesliga title and promotion to the Bundesliga in 2020.
After his success in both the 2. Bundesliga and the Bundesliga with Arminia Bielefeld, Seufert moved to SpVgg Greuther Fürth, a newly promoted Bundesliga side, in the beginning of the 2021-22 season. During his time there, he was loaned to SV Sandhausen in the 3. Liga. Seufert then pivoted to sign with second-division Austrian side SV Ried in July 2023 and ultimately signed with FK Jerv in the Norwegian third division from August 2024 through the end of the year.
With Seufert, the Norwegian side made it to the second round of the national cup and earned second place in the division for the 2024 season. Seufert logged the majority of minutes in his time with the club and helped FK Jerv make a run in the promotion playoffs last fall.
"I am thrilled to join the Richmond Kickers and take this next step in my professional career," Seufert said. "This club has a rich history and an incredible fan base, especially the Red Army. I can't wait to contribute to the team's success both on and off the field. I'm ready to give my all and make an impact for the Kickers this season!"
