PAPILLION, Neb. – Union Omaha today announced that attacker Lagos Kunga has re-signed with the club for the 2025 season, pending league and federation approval. Kunga's 14 goal contributions across all competitions made for a breakout season that he'll hope to build upon this year.
Kunga found his stride in 2024 after signing with the Owls near the close of the 2023 regular season. The one-time Des Moines Menace player and Atlanta United FC product netted 10 goals in all competitions. His 51 successful dribbles led USL League One last season, while 12 goal contributions between the league and USL Jägermeister Cup put him third on the team.
Kunga also made a major impact in the Owls' playoff march to their second USL League One title. He had a goal contribution in each of their three playoff matches, including the lone goal in a Quarterfinal win against the Richmond Kickers, capping off one of the wildest sequences in club history.
"I'm very happy to be bringing Lagos back for the 2025 season," said Omaha Head Coach Dominic Casciato. "He's such an impactful player in the final third, and there's not many players in League One or the Championship that can do what he does.
"He's a pleasure to work with and has genuine top-end quality, so I'm excited to get to work with him again as we look to build on the success we've enjoyed together over the past two seasons."
Kunga grew up playing in the academy system for Major League Soccer side Atlanta United FC, scoring 10 goals in 21 appearances for the U-18 squad. He played on loan with ATLUTD's then-affiliate Charleston Battery in 2017 before his Homegrown Player status went into effect with Atlanta.
Kunga spent 2018 with Atlanta United 2, scoring five goals in the club's inaugural USL Championship season. The Angola native also spent time with fellow Championship sides Memphis 901 FC and Phoenix Rising FC, winning the 2020 USL Championship Western Conference Final with the latter.
Most recently in 2023, Kunga helped USL League Two side Des Moines Menace reach the USL League Two Central Conference Final. Internationally, Kunga has earned four caps for the U-20 USYNT, scoring a goal at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in South Korea.
