TAMPA, Fla. – USL League One today announced that Union Omaha head coach Dominic Casciato has been voted the 2024 USL League One Coach of the Year. In only his second season as a head coach, the 38-year-old Casciato is the first coach in league history to be named Coach of the Year twice.
Casciato guided Omaha to back-to-back USL League One Players' Shields in his second year at the helm. The 2023 Coach of the Year led the Owls to a 15-5-3 record and tallied the second-most points per game (2.18) and the most goals per game (2.14) in a single season in league history. Omaha led all teams with 13 points gained from losing positions this season and set a new single-season league record with a +23 goal differential.
"I'm delighted and humbled to win this award and feel it's deserved validation for the hard work done by our staff behind the scenes," Casciato said. "So, I'd like to say a big thank you to Ladulé [LoSarah], Vinnie [Candela], Beto [Estrada], Mykel [Nayeri], Bob [Hammons], Kayla [Roland] and Tobi [Maertzke] for always putting the needs of the team first - your sacrifice and endeavor has given us the platform to be successful.
"On-field success is only possible when there's stability off the field, so I'm very grateful to our owners led by Gary Green and Larry Botel, and our front office led by Martie Cordaro and Alexis Boulos, for all their support over the course of the year.
"Finally, thank you to the players. All I can ever ask is that you give your all, day in and day out, and since day one you've done that and so much more. It's amazing to see how we've been able to find a way and prove people wrong, no matter what is thrown at us, time and time again this season. But, the job's not finished yet - one more to go on Sunday."
Following a decorated, four-year playing career at NCAA Division II Limestone University, the Tower Hamlets, England native began his coaching career as a graduate assistant coach at St. John's University in 2010. From there, Casciato spent time within the technical staffs or front offices of several clubs including USL League Two's Jersey Express SC, the NPSL's Brooklyn Italians, Spanish La Liga's RCD Espanyol, NISA's New York Cosmos, the USL Championship's El Paso Locomotive FC and the Danish Superliga's FC Midtjylland, among others.
Casciato received 70% of the ballot - the second-highest percentage in league history - to earn the award. Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC's Éamon Zayed finished second on 20% with a club-record, second-place finish, while the Richmond Kickers' Darren Sawatzky finished third on 5% - via tiebreaker - after leading the Kickers to the postseason for the first time since 2022. In total, four coaches received votes.
The 2024 USL League One Awards were voted on by each team's technical staff and executives and only account for 2024 USL League One regular season play.
