TAMPA, Fla. – USL League One today announced that One Knoxville SC goalkeeper Sean Lewis has been voted the 2024 USL League One Goalkeeper of the Year. Lewis' recognition marks the first time in club history a Knoxville player has been voted as an individual league award winner.
"I'm honored to be receiving this award in a league full of quality goalkeepers," Lewis said. "I would like to thank my coaches and training partners who have helped me continue my progress over the past year. From off-season training to the playoffs, the group I had around me was key to my success this year."
In his second season in Knoxville, Lewis earned his second consecutive All-League honor and became the third consecutive goalkeeper to claim back-to-back Golden Gloves, posting a season-best 0.73 goals-against average mark. Racking up an 8-5-5 record in the 18 matches he played, Lewis totaled seven clean sheets, 52 saves and 147 recoveries. The USL Championship veteran conceded multiple goals in a single match only twice all season.
"Sean had another great year and fully deserved to be named Goalkeeper of the Year," Knoxville interim head coach Ilija Ilić said. "He was a pillar of our defense this year, and this award goes to him and his teammates, who helped him achieve it. I'm proud of his effort on the field and his role in the locker room this season!"
The Rockford, Mich. native began his career close to home, playing collegiately at Western Michigan University (2010-12) and Oakland University (2013). Following stints with former USL League Two side Panama City Beach Pirates (2014) and Australian outfit Olympia FC Warriors (2015), Lewis inked his first professional deal with former NASL side Jacksonville Armada FC in 2016. Between 2016 and 2022, Lewis made 97 appearances across all competitions for Jacksonville Armada FC, Penn FC, FC Tulsa and Indy Eleven. Since joining Knoxville in 2022, Lewis has won back-to-back Golden Gloves, been named to back-to-back All-League Teams and was the Goalkeeper of the Year runner-up a season ago.
Lewis received 25.3% of the ballot to earn the award. 2024 USL League One All-League Second Team selection and Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC goalkeeper Lalo Delgado finished second on 24.1% with nine clean sheets and 46 saves, while Forward Madison FC's Bernd Schipmann finished third on 22.8% with nine clean sheets and 18 goals conceded - both tied for the league lead.
Lewis' 25% of the ballot earned is the lowest total among USL League One Goalkeeper of the Year winners in league history. Additionally, the 2.5% difference between the first and third finalists is the slimmest in league history. In total, six players received votes.
The 2024 USL League One Awards were voted on by each team's technical staff and executives and only account for 2024 USL League One regular season play.
