MADISON, Wis. - No. 7 Spokane Velocity FC became the second expansion team in USL League One history to advance to the USL League One Final in its inaugural season, advancing to the league's crowning match after outlasting No. 3 Forward Madison FC in a penalty kick shootout, 5-4, at a packed Breese Stevens Field.
Spokane - the lowest seed to ever advance to the USL League One Final - held Madison scoreless through 120 minutes before winning a penalty kick shootout for the first time in club history. Through regulation and extra time, Madison and Spokane went blow-for-blow in attack, but neither team was able to produce anything of major quality, with just three shots on target for both teams combined. The game pushed into extra time, but the flow of play continued, ultimately ending level and resulting in a penalty kick shootout.
Spokane goalkeeper Brooks Thompson proved to be Velocity FC's hero, diving to save Cherif Dieye's penalty with an outstretched hand. Spokane were perfect from the spot, ultimately outlasting Madison through Thompson's crucial save on the 'Mingos' third try.
