TAMPA, Fla. – USL League One today announced the Team of the Week for Week 25 of the 2024 regular season with Charlotte Independence goalkeeper Matt Levy named Player of the Week presented by Konami eFootball with a season-high nine saves in his first professional start.
Levy's nine saves - tied for the fourth-most in a single match in league history - helped Charlotte to a 1-0 road victory against the Richmond Kickers and confirmed the Jacks' seventh clean sheet of the season. The 24-year-old 'keeper joined Nick Holliday (NC) as the only player in league history to record nine or more saves in their first professional start.
A native of Pembroke Pines, Fla., Levy played collegiately at Jacksonville University between 2018-21 before spending one season at Florida International University as a graduate transfer in 2022. Before signing his first professional contract with the Charlotte Independence in 2023, Levy spent time in USL League Two with the Charlotte Eagles.
"First and foremost I just need to thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for the ability and opportunity to play the sport I love," Levy said. "Secondly, I think the hours of work before and during training with Blake [Ellis], our goalkeeper coach, definitely helped me be prepared for this moment. Finally, the guys played a huge part in helping with my confidence going into the game. I knew they had confidence in me, so their belief in me allowed me to play freely because I knew they trusted me."
In the final Team of the Week of the season, Greenville led all teams with three starters and one bench player. In total, Lexington, Charlotte, Omaha, Central Valley and South Georgia also placed multiple players across the Team of the Week and Team of the Week bench.
COACH - Éamon Zayed, Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC: In a 2024 USL Jägermeister Cup Final rematch, Zayed again prevailed over Madison in Windsor, Colo. Despite trailing the 'Mingos in possession, corners, passing accuracy and several other statistical categories, the Hailstorm joined Charlotte as the only team to defeat a playoff-bound side on Judgment Day. Per American Soccer Analysis, Zayed's side won 1.47 points above expected and tallied a goal differential 0.74 above expected.
GK - Matt Levy, Charlotte Independence: In his second professional match and first professional start, Levy's nine saves against Richmond were the most in a single match this season. The 24-year-old confirmed a clean sheet and registered an 82% passing accuracy rate, totaled 11 recoveries and completed six long balls. According to American Soccer Analysis, Levy led all goalkeepers in goals conceded below expected (2.08) and goals added (2.27).
D - Kaelon Fox, Lexington SC: Lexington's inaugural signing provided his first assist for the club in its final League One match. The former University of Kentucky standout also won five duels and completed over 84% of his passes to help Lexington shut out Chattanooga.
D - Javier Mariona, Central Valley Fuego FC: Central Valley's 20-year-old USL Academy signing bagged his third goal of the season in a losing effort against Omaha. The former El Salvador youth international recorded four recoveries, three duels won, two clearances, two shots on target, and completed 83% of his passes.
D - Bruno Rendón, Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC: Rendón added to his career-best campaign with his 15th goal of the season across all competitions. In addition to his late match-winner against Madison, the Cuban provided nine duels won, six recoveries, five completed long passes, four fouls won and two tackles won.
D - Curtis Thorn, South Georgia Tormenta FC: Thorn recorded his first goal for South Georgia since departing the club for Miami FC a season ago. The Fulham FC youth product registered three duels won, three blocks, three clearances, two recoveries, and completed 80% of his passes. Per American Soccer Analysis, Thorn led all players with an interrupting score of 0.32.
M - Alexis Cerritos, Lexington SC: The former El Salvador international scored the winning goal in Lexington's final League One match, a 3-0 victory against Chattanooga. Cerritos tallied six duels won, five recoveries, four completed long passes, two dribbles completed, two interceptions, and completed over 92% of his passes.
M - Ates Diouf, Lexington SC: Lexington's all-time leading scorer netted the 2-year-old side's final League One goal off of an assist from goalkeeper Amal Knight in stoppage time. The Senegalese goalscorer added seven duels won, four fouls earned, three shots on target, two dribbles completed, and was accurate on over 85% of his passes.
M - Ryen Jiba, Union Omaha: In his first season back in Omaha since being drafted by and subsequently transferred to Minnesota United FC in 2023, Jiba scored his first professional goal - the winner against Central Valley. The 2022 USL League One Young Player of the Year finalist provided an assist to confirm the first multi-goal-contribution match of his career and added five duels won, five recoveries and three successful crosses.
M - Evan Lee, Greenville Triumph SC: League One's all-time appearances leader concluded the most productive regular season of his lengthy career with a goal and an assist against Peach States Derby rival South Georgia. The 30-year-old also registered three duels won, two completed long passes, two recoveries, and completed nearly 84% of his passes.
M - Lyam MacKinnon, Greenville Triumph SC: The second-year Swiss goalscorer locked up the USL League One Golden Boot with a brace against rival South Georgia on Saturday. Through 74 minutes, the 25-year-old also won one penalty, won four duels, placed four shots on target, created three chances, and completed 80% of his passes. Per American Soccer Analysis, MacKinnon led all players with 0.58 points added.
F - Leo Castro, Greenville Triumph SC: The decorated Colombian forward assisted Lyam MacKinnon's opening goal against South Georgia to kick off Greenville's lopsided 5-1 victory. Castro also provided five duels won, two clearances, two dribbles completed, two shots on target, and completed over 78% of his passes.
