Northern Colorado's Lalo Delgado shines in pair of shutout victories

TAMPA, Fla. – USL League One today announced the Team of the Week for Week 22 of the 2024 regular season with Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC goalkeeper Lalo Delgado named Player of the Week presented by Konami eFootball with 15 saves across a pair of shutout victories.

Delgado - who is currently in third place in a tight 2024 USL League One Golden Glove race with a goals-against average value of 0.89 - produced a career-high eight saves against rival Central Valley on Wednesday before recording seven saves against South Georgia on Saturday, helping the Hailstorm claim a pair of convincing shutout victories and a second consecutive postseason berth.

Only the eighth time a goalkeeper has been named USL League One Player of the Week, Delgado becomes the first 'keeper to be named Player of the Week on multiple occasions in league history. Delgado was first named USL League One Player of the Week in Week 27 of the 2023 USL League One season.

"It's good that we're getting back to that standard as we get ready for a playoff run," Delgado said after posting an eight-save shutout against rival Central Valley.

"We're getting to our standard. Credit to the defense, we've been working really hard for it," Delgado added after recording seven saves in Northern Colorado's playoff-clinching victory against South Georgia.

"We're into the playoffs but that's not our goal," Hailstorm Head Coach Éamon Zayed said after defeating South Georgia. "It's a nice achievement, a box ticked off, but our goal isn't just to make the playoffs."

Benefitting from playing twice in Week 22, Northern Colorado and Madison placed a combined nine starters on the Team of the Week after picking up a total of 10 points on the week. Omaha and Knoxville also placed multiple players across the Team of the Week and Team of the Week bench as each side posted an unbeaten Week 22 record through two matches.

COACH - Éamon Zayed, Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC: Zayed's Hailstorm picked up a week-high six points through a pair of shutout victories against Central Valley and South Georgia. Northern Colorado's +5 goal differential and 1.39 points won above expected led all teams in Week 22, according to American Soccer Analysis.

GK - Lalo Delgado, Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC: Northern Colorado's second-year shot-stopped was stellar in a pair of Week 22 victories, racking up two clean sheets and a week-best 15 saves. Delgado led all players with 22 recoveries and 15 completed long passes, and per American Soccer Analysis, led all goalkeepers in goals added (1.28), goals conceded below expected (1.46) and passing score (5.79).

D - Michael Chilaka, Forward Madison FC: The former Israel youth international scored the second goal of his professional career and first since 2021 in Madison's convincing win at Charlotte. Playing in every minute of Madison's four-point week, the first-year 'Mingo totaled eight completed long passes, eight duels won, six clearances, four recoveries, and completed 92% of his passes.

D - Jacob Crull, Forward Madison FC: The League One veteran and second-year 'Mingo saw action in all 180 minutes of Madison's playoff-clinching Week 22. The 27-year-old defender provided one assist, 15 recoveries, seven duels won, six successful long passes, three tackles won, two clearances, and completed over 90% of his passes.

D - Dani Fernández, One Knoxville SC: One of just a few players remaining from Knoxville's inaugural USL League Two roster in 2022, Fernández scored the goal to secure One Knox's first postseason berth of its professional era. Playing in 180 across each of Knoxville's two Week 22 draws, the Spaniard tallied 13 recoveries, six duels won, five completed long passes, two blocks, two clearances, and completed over 92% of his passes. Per American Soccer Analysis, Fernández finished the week first in points added (1.71) and second in goals added (0.56).

D - Noah Powder, Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC: The Trinidad and Tobago international helped Northern Colorado to a pair of shutout victories in Week 22 with a goal against South Georgia. Across 111 minutes, Powder accrued seven duels won, three tackles won, three successful long passes, and completed over 92% of his passes. 

M - Marky Hernández, Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC: Northern Colorado's all-time appearances leader bagged his first Hailstorm brace in a lopsided victory against South Georgia. Across two victories and 69 minutes of play, Hernández contributed with an additional three recoveries, two duels won, and according to American Soccer Analysis, a week-best 1.72 goals scored above expected.

M - John Murphy, Jr., Forward Madison FC: Murphy, Jr. provided a huge boost to Madison's four-point, playoff-clinching week through his 12 duels won, nine recoveries, eight fouls won, six completed long passes, two chances created and 83% passing accuracy rate.

M - Charlie Ostrem, Union Omaha: The Richmond Beach, Wash. native enjoyed the first one-goal, one-assist match of his young professional career against Spokane on Wednesday to kick off Omaha's four-point week. The 24-year-old added nine recoveries, nine duels won, five chances created, five clearances, three completed crosses and two blocks across 180 minutes of play.

M - Danny Robles, Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC: The former United States youth international and Hailstorm veteran produced the second multi-goal-contribution match of his career with a goal and an assist against South Georgia. Through 141 minutes, Robles totaled nine duels won, four chances created, four recoveries, four completed crosses and two blocks.

F - Juan Galindrez, Forward Madison FC: Through 105 minutes of action, Galindrez scored once against Knoxville and once against Charlotte to secure four points and a postseason berth for Madison. Now tied for the third-most goals in League One history (29), the Colombian goalscorer added five duels won, three dribbles completed and three recoveries.

F - Ethan Hoard, Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC: Hoard scored the winning goal against rival Central Valley on Wednesday before helping his Hailstorm to a one-sided victory against South Georgia on Saturday. The first-year professional registered seven duels won, three recoveries, and according to American Soccer Analysis, led all players with 1.01 goals added.
