Luis Gil named Player of the Week with goal, assist in Spokane's six-point week

TAMPA, Fla. – USL League One today announced the Team of the Week for Week 19 of the 2024 regular season with Spokane Velocity FC midfielder Luis Gil named Player of the Week presented by Konami eFootball with a goal and an assist across a pair of matches.

The 15-year veteran registered his 14th and 15th goal contributions of the season - by far a career-best - with a goal against Omaha on Wednesday and an assist against Central Valley on Saturday. Both of Gil's goal contributions helped open the scoring for Spokane in each respective match and led Velocity FC to victories in both contests.

"It was a huge six-point week for us to continue to be in the mix for a playoff spot," Gil said. "Our season has been full of ups and downs, but we have made it the point where we have to take it to the next level. On the individual side of the game, I have been finding some success but credit is due to the rest of my teammates.

"We are finally clicking in certain areas on the pitch both offensively and defensively, and we're getting rewarded for that hard work. Every remaining match is crucial, so we must build off of each one."

"I'm really proud of the team," Spokane Head Coach Leigh Veidman said. "Going from off a long 10-day road trip to a two-match week and coming out with six points is no easy task, but the outcome shows the work the team is putting in behind the scenes so they deserve everything they got.

"Every player in our team has been pivotal this week, but Luis has executed in both games, shown incredible leadership, has a killer mentality in front of goal and sets the standards of what is needed on both sides of the ball. I'm really happy for him."

In total, Spokane led all teams with four players named to the Team of the Week. Northern Colorado, Charlotte and Omaha were the only other teams to place starters on the Team of the Week.
