Charlotte's Juan Carlos Obregón, Jr. earns first senior national team call-up for Honduras

USL League One Golden Boot leader will be available for pair of La H's Concacaf Nations League matches

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charlotte Independence forward and USL League One Golden Boot leader Juan Carlos Obregón, Jr. earned his first senior national team call-up for Honduras on Friday. The 26-year-old will be available for selection in La H's Concacaf Nations League League B, Group B matches against Trinidad and Tobago on Sept. 6 and Jamaica on Sept. 10. Both matches will take place at Estadio Nacional Chelato Uclés in Tegucigalpa, Honduras and will be broadcast on Paramount+ in the United States.

Competing for Honduras' youth national team in 2021, Obregón saw the pitch seven times for the U-23 team. Obregón made five appearances for Honduras in the 2020 Concacaf Men's Olympic Qualifying Championship, helping Honduras win Group B which consisted of Canada, El Salvador and Haiti, defeat the United States in the Semifinal, and fall to Mexico on penalties in the Final. Obregón scored in his lone appearance for Honduras against New Zealand in group-stage action of soccer at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

In his sixth season as a professional and first in Charlotte, Obregón, Jr. has constructed a career-best season with 16 goals and three assists across a combined 26 USL League One, USL Jägermeister Cup and U.S. Open Cup appearances. Obregón, Jr. was recognized as USL League One's Player of the Month in June and Player of the Week in Week 11 and has made a combined 10 appearances on the USL League One Team of the Week and USL Jägermeister Cup Team of the Round this season.

Obregón, Jr. made his professional debut with Rio Grande Valley FC in the USL Championship in 2019. After spending two seasons in Edinburg, Texas, Obregón, Jr. spent the next two campaigns with fellow USL Championship side Hartford Athletic. Across four seasons of USL Championship play, Obregón amassed 24 goal contributions across 70 matches with Rio Grande Valley and Hartford.

Obregón, Jr. spent a portion of the 2023 season with FC Motagua in the top-flight Liga Betcris de Honduras. During his time in Tegucigalpa, Obregón, Jr. made nine appearances for the Ciclón Azul across 2023 Concacaf Champions Cup and league play. In July 2023, Obregón, Jr. returned to the USL Championship with Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC. Across 13 matches with the Riverhounds, Obregón scored three goals - two of which were match-winners - and tallied one assist to help Pittsburgh claim its first Players' Shield.
