TAMPA, Fla. – USL League One today announced the Team of the Round for Round 7 of the 2024 USL Jägermeister Cup with Union Omaha forward Steevan Dos Santos named Player of the Round presented by Konami eFootball with a match-winning, stoppage-time goal against Central Valley.
Facing West Group elimination at the time, the veteran goalscorer rescued all three points on the road with a stoppage-time stunner against Central Valley on Friday, snapping the hosts' multi-match win streak. With his ninth goal of the season, Dos Santos has now equaled Noe Meza's all-time club record of 23 goals for the Owls.
"Steevan scored an important goal to help us secure three points on the road, so I'm pleased his performance has been recognized by the league," Omaha Head Coach Dominic Casciato said. "We now look forward to getting back into league action on August 24 against Richmond."
In total, Northern Colorado, Greenville, Madison and Omaha were the lone teams to place multiple starters on the Team of the Round.
COACH - Mike Jeffries, Charlotte Independence: Facing elimination from East Group contention, Mike Jeffries guided his side to a 2-1 victory against Greenville on Saturday. Despite Greenville maintaining advantages in a number of key statistical categories, the Independence led all teams with 1.86 points won above expected and a goal differential above expected goal differential value of 1.20, per American Soccer Analysis.
GK - Wallis Lapsley, Union Omaha: Lapsley made his sixth appearance of the season with Omaha on Friday, recording the 13th clean sheet of his professional career and notching a week-high seven saves. The 27-year-old led all goalkeepers with 1.59 goals conceded below expected and 1.80 goals added, according to American Soccer Analysis.
D - McCain Clarke, Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC: In his 13th match as a professional, the Hailstorm youngster made his competition debut and recorded the first goal contribution of his career in the form of an assist on Bruno Rendón's opening goal. Clarke registered four total chances created, four duels won, three completed crosses, and completed 81% of his passes.
D - Jorge Corrales, Lexington SC: The veteran MLS and Cuba international defender helped Lexington hold Barrel Brawl rival Knoxville scoreless in a pivotal Central Group clash. The 33-year-old recorded 10 duels won, six recoveries, four completed long passes, three tackles won, and completed 87% of his passes.
D - Jake Dengler, South Georgia Tormenta FC: The 2022 USL League One champion and longtime Tormenta FC defender guided South Georgia to a point on the road against Richmond with his 93% passing accuracy rate, eight completed long passes, four duels won and a round-leading 10 clearances.
M - Carlos Anguiano, Greenville Triumph SC: The Portland Timbers Academy product and first-year Triumph SC midfielder registered the 10th assist of his career and second on the season, helping Lyam MacKinnon score in the 10th minute. Anguiano completed 87% of his passes, registered five recoveries, won five duels and created three total chances.
M - Devin Boyce, Forward Madison FC: The 2021 USL League One All-League Second Team selection scored his fifth goal of the season - his first in USL Jägermeister Cup play - via a scintillating set-piece strike to help Madison claim all three points against Chattanooga. Boyce added five recoveries, five duels won, two chances created, and completed 77% of his passes.
M - Lyam MacKinnon, Greenville Triumph SC: With his 10th-minute stunner at Charlotte on Saturday, MacKinnon surpassed current teammate Leo Castro as the club's all-time leading scorer with 21 goals in only 53 matches. MacKinnon also contributed with eight duels won, three recoveries, three completed dribbles, three fouls won and two chances created.
M - Haruki Yamazaki, Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC: Yamazaki has continued his production amid his first professional season, leading the league in Round 7 with his 14 recoveries and six tackles won. The Nara, Japan native also added 12 duels won, two completed long passes, two chances created, two fouls won, and completed 88% of his 56 passes.
F - Steevan Dos Santos, Union Omaha: The veteran Cape Verdean goalscorer bagged his ninth goal of the season - a dramatic, last-minute winner - in the sixth minute of stoppage time in Fresno on Friday. The 34-year-old contributed with an additional 16 duels won - a week-high - along with four recoveries, four fouls won, two completed dribbles and two chances created.
F - Juan Carlos Obregón, Jr., Charlotte Independence: The only player with multiple goal contributions on the week, Obregón, Jr. provided assists on both of Charlotte's goals in a victory against Greenville. In addition to tallying his first two assists on the season, the Honduran added seven duels won, three fouls won, two shots on target, two recoveries, and completed 85% of his passes.
F - Garrett McLaughlin, Forward Madison FC: The 2023 USL League One champion scored his first goal for the 'Mingos in his side's 2-1 victory against Chattanooga. In total, McLaughlin tallied two shots on target and an 82% passing accuracy rate.
