Northern Colorado, Greenville and Madison lead their respective groups
Now officially at the halfway mark of the inaugural USL Jägermeister Cup, the pressure is rising with all 12 clubs remaining in contention for the tournament's knockout rounds. Detailed below are some high-stakes matches to keep an eye on along with knockout-clinching and elimination details with 24 group stage matches remaining.
As a reminder, the 2024 USL Jägermeister Cup includes a group stage and a knockout round that creates additional matches of consequence in the annual calendar. The three groups - West, Central and East - consist of four clubs each and are built to emphasize regional rivalries.
The competition also includes non-traditional modifications that encourage attacking soccer and provide entertaining moments for fans, including goals scored determining one of four knockout round spots and matches ending level after full time advancing to a penalty kick shootout with the winning team earning an additional point.
One of two clubs yet to suffer a loss in USL Jägermeister Cup action, Greenville will look to extend its all-time unbeaten streak against Lexington in the pair's fifth meeting overall. Lexington, while struggling in league play, have amassed the most points among the nine non-group leaders and its seven goals are the second-most among that group. While Greenville will likely remain atop the East Group regardless of Round 5 result, a positive Lexington result paired with a Madison misstep could see LSC jump into the Central Group's leading position.
Like Greenville, Northern Colorado is the only other club to remain unbeaten in USL Jägermeister Cup play, and the Hailstorm are set to host Spokane for the first time on Saturday. In the pair's first meeting at ONE Spokane Stadium earlier this season, captain Luis Gil scored the match's lone goal to lift Velocity FC to its second-ever League One victory. While neither side is in a position to be eliminated or clinch a spot atop the West Group this weekend, Spokane snagging a few points away from Northern Colorado would be huge in the expansion side's quest to reach the knockout round.
