Pair of heartbreaking, last-minute goals in extra time end League One's 2024 U.S. Open Cup run

Charleston Battery 3 - 2 South Georgia Tormenta FC (A.E.T.)

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Matching its best-ever finish in the tournament, South Georgia Tormenta FC exited the U.S. Open Cup in the Round of 32 in heartbreaking fashion, conceding the decisive goal in stoppage time in the second half of extra time. In the third all-time meeting between the coastal clubs, Charleston and South Georgia traded goals across the first 90 minutes of play, as MD Myers scored twice for the hosts and Pedro Fonseca and Gabriel Rodríguez found the back of the net for the visitors. A 10-save outing from Tormenta FC goalkeeper Drew Romig was nearly enough to send the Ibises to a penalty kick shootout against the Battery, but a goal scored by Myers to complete his hat trick in the closing seconds of the match ultimately knocked South Georgia out of the cup.

Union Omaha 1 - 2 Sporting Kansas City (A.E.T.)

OMAHA, Neb. - In its second meeting with Sporting Kansas City, Union Omaha narrowly fell to the MLS original and four-time U.S. Open Cup champion after a last-minute goal from Alan Pulido in front of a sold-out crowd at Caniglia Field. A fairly wide-open contest in the first half, Omaha winger Lagos Kunga bagged his second goal of the tournament after being set up by Dion Acoff's pacey run down the wing and cross into the box in the 31st minute. From there, the Owls attempted to limit Sporting's offensive onslaught. A goal from Cyprus international Marinos Tzionis in the 48th minute would eventually send the match into extra time, and despite five saves from Omaha goalkeeper Rashid Nuhu and a number of missed opportunities for the visitors, former Mexico international Alan Pulido slipped a shot past Nuhu from the top of the box to steal the victory on the road.
