Kickers set to host Loudoun United FC for first meeting, Union Omaha gets rematch with Locomotive

The remaining eight USL League One clubs learned their opponents for the Third Round of the 2024 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Thursday afternoon as three sides received home draws against USL Championship opposition for the contests to be held between April 16-17.

League One’s eight clubs represent the largest contingent from a division to have advanced through the opening two rounds of this year’s tournament.

Two sides with impressive histories in the tournament were among the sides drawn as hosts with 1995 Open Cup title winner the Richmond Kickers set to face in-state foe Loudoun United FC of the USL Championship. The contest will mark the first meeting between the two clubs, with Loudoun having joined the Championship in 2019 as the Kickers joined USL League One for its inaugural season.

2022 Open Cup Quarterfinalists Union Omaha, meanwhile, will play host to El Paso Locomotive FC in a rematch of last year’s Second Round after advancing in impressive style from its Second Round contest on Wednesday night with a 3-1 victory against USL League Two club the Des Moines Menace. Omaha took a 2-0 victory against El Paso a season ago behind goals from Junior Palacios and Steevan Dos Santos and will be hoping for a similar outcome this time around.

The Charlotte Independence will also serve as hosts as they welcome USL Championship newcomer Rhode Island FC to Memorial Stadium for RIFC’s first game in the Open Cup. The Independence will take aim at reaching the Fourth Round of the Open Cup for only the second time in their history, having advanced to the Fifth Round in their inaugural season in 2015.

League One’s five other clubs will head on the road, with former League One title winner Greenville Triumph SC set to feature in one of the matchups of the round as it visits two-time Championship title winner Louisville City FC at Lynn Family Stadium. Spokane Velocity FC is set to visit Las Vegas Lights FC at Cashman Field as it seeks to continue its first run in the tournament, while South Georgia Tormenta FC will head to face Miami FC and try to spring an upset of a Championship club for a second consecutive year.

Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC will try to continue its success against USL Championship clubs as it heads to face FC Tulsa for the first time. Chattanooga Red Wolves SC, meanwhile, will go on the road to face Birmingham Legion FC in a regional clash between two cities separated by less than 150 miles.
