Madison lead league with six 'Mingos honored, Charlotte's Álvarez named Player of the Week

TAMPA, Fla. – USL League One today announced the Team of the Week for Week 4 of the 2024 regular season with Charlotte Independence midfielder Luis Álvarez named Player of the Week presented by Konami eFootball with a match-winning strike for the Jacks in stoppage time.

The 21-year-old Honduran midfielder developed collegiately at Instituto España Jesús Milla Selva before joining the youth ranks of top-flight Honduran side Lobos UPNFM. Álvarez made his professional Liga Betcris de Honduras debut in August 2021 and made 18 top-flight appearances with UPNFM between 2021 and 2022. On the international stage, Álvarez has previously been called into Honduras youth national team training camp.

Averaging just over 19 minutes per match across 32 appearances with the Jacks in his first season in the United States, Álvarez earned a starting spot in the Queen City in 2024, playing in all but one minute of Charlotte's season thus far. Álvarez notched his first professional goal contributions last season - one goal and two assists - and picked up right where he left off in 2024. After providing an assist on Charlotte's go-ahead goal in the 2023 USL League One Final, Álvarez's first goal contribution on the new season came in the form of a special stoppage-time winner against Spokane on Thursday, earning the rising talent his first professional Team and Player of the Week recognition.

"Right off the kickoff, we were able to create a great chance and get a goal out of it," Charlotte Head Coach Mike Jeffries said. "It set a confidence-building tone for us in the second half. I'm a little disappointed that we got disjointed in the second half and conceded the equalizer and a couple of other good chances, but credit to the guys; they hung in on a day that was really hard and managed to find a way to win."

Madison dominated the Team of the Week, placing a total of six 'Mingos on the list. Charlotte and Greenville also recorded multiple starters on the Team of the Week, while Knoxville and Lexington earned representation on both the Team of the Week and Team of the Week bench.

COACH - Rick Wright, Greenville Triumph SC: First-year Head Coach Right Wright guided Greenville to its biggest comeback victory ever, erasing a two-goal deficit against Lexington SC. His side dominated the hosts in terms of possession (61% to 39%), shots (26 to 10) and passes (529 to 347).

GK - Bernd Schipmann, Forward Madison FC: The former Philippines international recorded four saves en route to his second clean sheet of the season. For the second consecutive week, Schipmann registered the best goals-minus-expected-goals mark (-1.03) and goals-added value (1.15) on the week among goalkeepers, per American Soccer Analysis.

D - Jorge Corrales, Lexington SC: The Cuba international led the league with his 15 tackles won and 11 duels won in Lexington's 3-2 loss to Greenville. Corrales also recorded five clearances, four completed long balls, three recoveries and created a pair of chances.

M - Lyam MacKinnon, Greenville Triumph SC: MacKinnon netted the match-tying goal - his first score of the season - which helped spark the Greenville comeback in Lexington. The Swiss goalscorer added six duels won, five shots, three chances created, two tackles won, two fouls won and led the league with five completed crosses.
