Spokane's inaugural captain named Player of the Week in big week for the newcomers

TAMPA, Fla. – USL League One today announced the Team of the Week for Week 3 of the 2024 regular season with Spokane Velocity FC midfielder Luis Gil named Player of the Week presented by Konami eFootball for winning and converting Spokane's match-winning penalty.

Gil - the first USL League One Player of the Week in club history - powered Spokane to victory in its second home match at ONE Spokane Stadium. The veteran League One, Liga MX and MLS midfielder won and converted the match-winning penalty in the 35th minute of the match against Northern Colorado. The penalty conversion was the captain's first at the club level and first in his career since scoring from the spot for the United States U-23 Men's Youth National Team against Panama in a 2015 Concacaf Men's Olympic Qualifying Championship match.

"We have to give credit to the defense as well, especially playing against a team that’s so direct," Gil said of his defense. "They had to absorb so much pressure from the big boys up top."
