Greenville welcome Spokane to League One, Jermaine Jones gets a win, and more

USL League One officially kicked off its sixth season with three matches last Saturday. From Spokane's debut to Jermaine Jones' first victory, take a look at everything that stood out in Week 1.

Winningest club in league history welcomes Spokane to the league

The newest club in the league took on the winningest club in the league on Saturday and it went about as expected, despite Spokane accruing more than two times as many expected goals as Greenville. Spokane's Josh Dolling made history with the first goal of the League One season and the first goal in Velocity FC history, smashing a penalty past Christian Garner in the 14th minute. From there, though, Greenville put on a show in front of a raucous Reedy River Riot.

Greenville ended up defeating Spokane, 3-1, and all three goals were significant. The equalizing goal was scored by 19-year-old Zion Scarlett, with his first professional goal making him the youngest goalscorer in club history, the match-winning goal was scored by Evan Lee, the club's all-time appearances leader, and the final goal was scored by veteran forward Leo Castro, further cementing him as the club's oldest goalscorer and earning him both Player of the Week and Goal of the Week nods.

"I mean it's incredible," Evan Lee said of the victory. "I think we had a really, really good preseason. We brought in a lot of new faces, but it's kind of rejuvenated us a little bit. I think the energy around the team has been phenomenal, not to mention we see articles that people write, we see those kinds of things. That gives us a little extra motivation, and to be out here and win the first game, 3-1, is phenomenal."

Yankam makes history in Lexington

The most intriguing match of the weekend ended up finishing with no goals in a defensive battle between Lexington and Northern Colorado. Most notably, however, Lexington midfielder Yannick Yankam made history as the first active senior UEFA international to see action in USL League One. Even more impressive, Yankam is the first such player to suit up for an independent third-division club in American soccer history. The Malta international put in a solid shift through 72 minutes, reeling in seven recoveries, winning six of seven duels and completed 87% of his passes to be named to the Team of the Week bench.

Aside from Yankam's individual success on Saturday, both coaches were pleased with their respective club's performance.

"I look at the positives first and foremost, to keep a clean sheet at home in the first game of the season against one of the league leaders in goals last year, but I think it was one of those games where both teams were feeling each other out," Lexington Head Coach Darren Powell said.

"We got a clean sheet and a point away against one of the teams in the league that are strong, so it's a decent start," Hailstorm Head Coach Éamon Zayed said.

Jermaine Jones' Fuego FC off to hot start

The former United States Men's National Team and German Bundesliga legend kicked off his professional head coaching career with a 2-1 victory over South Georgia in Statesboro. Of the 41 coaches eligible, Jones became just the 12th gaffer in League One history to win his debut road match - the record currently sits at 12-17-12.

"It was a good game, and I'm super proud of my players," Jones said. "We went out and showed our faces. Now we go home and get back to work. We can't wait to play in front of our fans at home this weekend."

The challenge for Jones and Fuego FC now will be to take on Players' Shield holders Union Omaha in the Owls' opening match of the season. Jones will make his home coaching debut as he looks to make history; Players' Shield holders are an undefeated 3-0-1 in opening matches during subsequent seasons.
