2024 USL Kickoff Preseason Preview: 11 Young Players to Watch

JACKSON KHOURY, SOUTH GEORGIA TORMENTA FC

The defending USL League One Young Player of the Year is back in Statesboro for his second professional season. The 21-year-old Central Coast Mariners academy product enjoyed a stellar first professional season in Statesboro, leading all eligible young players with seven goals, 13 total goal contributions and 37 chances created. The Australian goalscorer accounted for four match-winning goals or assists and registered a career-best three-goal-contribution match in a 4-1 win in Madison on July 26. Khoury's 13 goal contributions are tied for the third-most in league history for a first-year professional behind Arturo Rodríguez's (NTX) 17 in 2019, Jacob Labovitz's (GVL) 14 in 2022 and Tumi Moshobane's (LAN) 14 in 2019.

LUIS ÁLVAREZ, CHARLOTTE INDEPENDENCE

The 21-year-old Honduras youth national team prospect made 32 appearances for the Jacks across all competitions a season ago. Álvarez made 18 appearances in Liga Nacional, starting in 10 matches and coming on as a substitute in eight games. He played college soccer at Instituto España Jesús Milla Selva in Honduras. In 2019, Álvarez won the U-16 and U-18 championship with Lobos UPNFM before he made his professional debut with the same club two years later. He scored his first goal for the club on September 9 against Chattanooga Red Wolves SC in front of the home supporters. Álvarez also recorded the assist for Charlotte's lone goal in the 2023 USL League One Final. The Honduran appeared in 30 matches for the Jacks last season.

NICHOLAS SIMMONDS, RICHMOND KICKERS

Simmonds became the second second-generation player to don the Kickers' shirt after his father Gregory Simmonds previously played for the club in 2003. The Midlothian native is the fifth player with Richmond United pedigree to sign a USL Academy contract with the Kickers during the 2023 season. He was previously called up to Jamaica's U-20 squad in 2024 and the U-17 squad in 2023 as the team competed to qualify for the FIFA U-17 World Cup. Simmonds was a member of the Richmond United U17 Boys which won the ECNL Boys National Final in July 2023. He scored one of the team's two goals as they went on to win 2-0 over Seattle United. That same week, he signed his first USL Academy contract with the Kickers. A month later, Simmonds scored an 84th-minute equalizer at City Stadium to secure a 3-3 result for the Kickers against Central Valley Fuego FC. His dramatic equalizer made him the youngest goalscorer in Kickers' history at 16 years, 8 months and 13 days old.

HASSAN GABO, GREENVILLE TRIUMPH SC

21-year-old Somalia youth national team prospect, Hassan Gabo, completed his debut professional season last year as one of the youngest players on the Triumph SC team. Before signing his first professional contract with Greenville back in February 2023, the defender competed for several teams throughout his teenage years: Real Salt Lake U-17 squad in 2019, VK Cobras FC youth club between 2019 and 2020, and the Somalia U-20 youth national team in 2022. Despite facing injuries throughout the 2023 season, Gabo tallied six clears, four interceptions, 39 passes, 32 duels, and played a total of 116 minutes. Gabo is set to embark on his second season with Triumph SC as a returning 2024 roster signee.

REAL GILL, NORTHERN COLORADO HAILSTORM FC

Gill, a 20-year-old Trinidad and Tobago international, comes to the Hailstorm from Club Sando in the TT Premier League, where he had been since May 2023. He made his professional debut with La Horquetta Rangers FC, also in Trinidad and Tobago, in 2022. He has scored four times in seven matches for Club Sando this season. He has made six appearances for the Trinidad and Tobago national team, scoring his only international goal in a 2-0 friendly win over Saint Martin in January 2023. "He's a dynamic winger, bags of speed, bags of energy," Hailstorm Head Coach Éamon Zayed said of Gill.

Beckett Howell, Richmond Kickers

Howell is the second academy player to sign a professional contract under Chief Sporting Officer and Head Coach Darren Sawatzky. He joins fellow Richmond United alum, Landon Johnson, who signed his first professional contract with the Kickers in September 2023. Since joining the Kickers on a USL Academy contract in February 2023, Howell grew into an important contributor down the final stretch of the 2023 season. In league play, Howell started the final four matches of the USL League One regular season, amassing 338 of his 429 total league minutes played in that run of matches. He made 13 total appearances for the club in all competitions with his first career start coming in July 2023 during the club’s international friendly against Comunicaciones FC. Howell won 55% of his aerial duels and 73% of his tackles. Howell started the final four matches as the team’s left fullback, proving he had the motor to join the attack aggressively and get back on defense after pushing forward.

Andre Zuluaga, Central Valley Fuego FC

The talented goalkeeper joins the club having most recently played for the Las Vegas Lights FC of the USL Championship and before that Zuluaga played with Inter Miami CF II in MLS NEXT Pro. Originally from Miami, Zuluaga made his mark early on as a member of the United States U-16 youth national team, where he made his debut on May 15, 2019. Since then, he has continued to excel at every level, showcasing his talent and passion for the sport.

Zion Scarlett, Greenville Triumph SC

19-year-old, Zion Scarlett joins Greenville Triumph SC for the 2024 season. This young striker has participated in several competitions and leagues, including: the Philadelphia Union U-17 academy from 2018 to 2020, the Columbus Crew U-19 Academy between 2020 and 2021, the Concacaf U-20 Championship, with Jamaica's U-20 youth national team in 2022, and Columbus Crew 2 in 2022 and 2023.

Danny Robles, Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC

Robles will be returning to Northern Colorado after spending the first part of the 2023 season with Ballard FC, champions of USL League Two. He played 27 times for the Hailstorm last season, making 21 starts and playing nearly 2,000 minutes. His season was highlighted by a goals in wins over North Carolina FC and the Chattanooga Red Wolves SC. He was also named in the USL League One Team of the Week in 2022 after his goal against Chattanooga. Robles' main contributions for Hailstorm last season came in defense, where he was one of the most proficient tacklers in the team with 25 tackles won. He also won 99 duels to go with 16 clearances and 19 interceptions.

Anthony Patti, Lexington SC

Anthony Patti is set to join the club after most recently playing for Albion San Diego in the NISA. Patti signed his first professional contract, ending his collegiate career, in 2022, joining Albion San Diego. He played in 23 matches and scored a goal as a defender. Patti played all 120 minutes of San Diego's first playoff fixture against Maryland Bobcats FC and played all 90 minutes in the club's semi-final defeat. During his collegiate tenure, he played two years for Mercer University before transferring back to his home state to join the the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. It was during his stint at Mercer that he also played for Texas United, a member of USL League Two.

McCain Clarke, Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC

Clarke was born in Arizona but considers himself a Colorado Native after living in the state for most of his life thus far. The 18-year-old spent time training with the Hailstorm during practice sessions in 2022, driving up north from Broomfield, Colo. Clarke has made nine appearances in USL League One for the Hailstorm.
