Madison's Jayden Onen named Player of the Week with two-assist Week 22

TAMPA, Fla. – USL League One today announced the Team of the Week for Week 22 of the 2023 regular season with Forward Madison FC forward Jayden Onen named Player of the Week presented by Konami eFootball with his two-assist week for the 'Mingos.

The English Premier League academy product and Uganda national team prospect enjoyed a productive Week 22. Onen started his week by assisting Stephen Payne's match-winning score in the 90th minute of a previously scoreless match against Chattanooga on Wednesday. On Saturday, Onen added to his total with an assist on Nazeem Bartman's equalizing score against Knoxville. 

The 22-year-old Londoner was tied for a week-high with his six chances created and four shots on target. Onen also completed the most passes among all forwards in Week 22 (51) and maintained the second-best goals-added figure on the week (0.83), according to American Soccer Analysis.

The Charlotte Independence and South Georgia Tormenta FC lead all clubs with a pair of starters on the Team of the Week with the clubs’ one-win Week 22. In total, 10 of the 12 clubs in action in Week 22 see representation on the Team of the Week or Team of the Week bench.

GK - Austin Pack, Charlotte Independence: With his seven-save Week 22, Pack has positioned himself with the third-most saves in a single season in League One history (87), just 19 shy of claiming the record. Pack also led all goalkeepers on the week with his 1.83 goals conceded below expected and his 1.80 goals added, according to American Soccer Analysis.

D - Nicolás Cardona, Chattanooga Red Wolves SC: Across two Week 22 matches, the Puerto Rico international led the league with his 16 duels and 11 tackles won. Cardona also added 11 recoveries, four clearances and three chances created in a solid week for the Red Wolves.

D - Davey Mason, South Georgia Tormenta FC: The first-year Ibis defender tallied his first goal contributions in a South Georgia shirt with a pair of assists in his side’s 2-1 home victory over Fuego FC on Wednesday. The 25-year-old defender also matched a week-high six chances created to go along with eight duels won, seven recoveries, five successful crosses and four clearances across two matches.

D - Lucky Opara, Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC: Opara registered the first multi-goal match of his career with a brace against Omaha on Saturday. The Nigerian defender also completed six long passes, earned four recoveries and won four duels.

D - Tate Robertson, Lexington SC: One of Lexington’s handful of breakout stars, Robertson recorded his second consecutive one-goal, one-assist match on Saturday to complement his seven recoveries, three clearances, three duels won and two interceptions.

M - Pedro Fonseca, South Georgia Tormenta FC: Fonseca tallied a goal and an assist in South Georgia’s 3-2 loss in Charlotte on the weekend. The Brazilian midfielder was productive across two Week 22 matches, totaling 10 duels won, six recoveries, four successful long passes and four chances created.

M - Joel Johnson, Charlotte Independence: The former Liberia international and all-time Independence appearance leader is enjoying the most productive season of his nearly decade-long career. The 30-year-old registered just the second multi-goal-contribution match of his career with his goal and assist against Tormenta FC, adding to his total with four duels won and a 79% passing accuracy.

M - Nil Vinyals, Richmond Kickers: Vinyals recorded his first assists of the season last week, totaling one in each of the Kickers’ two Week 22 matches. The Spaniard’s six chances created were tied for the most on the week, and the longtime League One midfielder also won nine duels, completed eight crosses, completed seven long passes and earned seven recoveries all while completing over 84% of his passes.

F - Alexis Cerritos, Central Valley Fuego FC: In a week in which Cerritos was called into El Salvador national team camp, the 22-year-old forward also recorded a pair of goals across two Week 22 matches for Central Valley. Cerritos won 14 duels, six fouls and created a quartet of chances in addition to his pair of scores.

F - Garrett McLaughlin, North Carolina FC: The NCFC captain scored once in each of North Carolina’s two matches on the week, adding 12 duels won, 10 recoveries and four fouls won to his productive Week 22.

F - Jayden Onen, Forward Madison FC: The 22-year-old Londoner assisted both of Madison’s two Week 22 goals, adding 10 recoveries, eight duels won, six chances created, four interceptions and three tackles while maintaining an 84% passing accuracy.
