Kickers' Brazilian youngster, João Gomiero, bags three goals to earn Player of the Week nod

TAMPA, Fla. – USL League One today announced the Team of the Week for Week 10 of the 2023 regular season with the Richmond Kickers’ João Gomiero named Player of the Week presented by Konami eFootball with his three-goal week.

Joining the Richmond Kickers in the offseason, Gomiero is enjoying a hot start to his first full professional season. The 25-year-old São Paulo, Brazil native scored three times across two Week 10 matches for the Kickers, tripling his previous career-high of goals in a single professional season.

Gomiero opened his 2023 account with a long-range, lofted goal to open the scoring against North Carolina on Wednesday before following it up with a quick far-post finish to double the visitors’ advantage in Cary. The Brazilian closed out his week with a similar goal to his second in North Carolina, slotting a low ball to the far post to extend the Richmond advantage over Lexington on Saturday evening.

"It felt amazing because I felt we've had really good games at home and it was frustrating to go a couple of games without scoring," Gomiero said following the win over Lexington. "It was such a big game for us coming back from two games on the road and scoring the second goal which opened up the lead. With so many people in the stadium, so many familiar faces, it was just a great feeling. It feels amazing to be a part of history now."

"Thank you, Richmond. It's so awesome that we packed the stands again," Richmond Head Coach and Sporting Director Darren Sawatzky said. "This was a really tough week for us. We played three really good halves before this [game against Lexington]. What happened at NCFC is not characteristic of this group so the guys needed a response. It wasn't perfect but both of the goals were good today and we met some metrics that we really wanted to meet in the game. It was a good day."

One Knoxville SC’s six-point Week 10 sees the expansion side lead the way with three starters named to the Team of the Week, while North Carolina, Northern Colorado and Richmond join Knoxville with multiple players represented as starters or bench players.
