Charlotte, Greenville enjoy big Week 6

Austin Pack went absolutely off, Greenville got back to its winning ways, North Carolina finally handled its business against the Red Wolves, and Matheus Cassini went full jogo bonito in Knoxville.

Here are the biggest takeaways from each Week 6 League One match.

1. Austin Pack was that guy for the Jacks

Despite being temporarily dethroned at the top of the table by Dogwood Derby rival NCFC on Friday, the Charlotte Independence (3-0-3, 1st) returned to the top with a four-point Week 6 six consisting of a scoreless draw against Union Omaha (1-1-2, 7th) and a 1-0 victory over Central Valley Fuego FC (1-3-1, 12th). Unbeaten in six straight, the Jacks are enjoying their longest undefeated start to a season in the club's nine-year history. Charlotte's six-match unbeaten streak and 12 points in that span are both tied for the third-most to start a season in league history.

Charlotte started the week with a big-time draw against Omaha, keeping a clean sheet in a match where the Owls fired nine shots on frame and accumulated an expected goals mark of 2.70. While the Jacks had trouble creating chances offensively, nine massive saves from goalkeeper Austin Pack helped the Jacks remain unbeaten.

"It was a hard game. It’s crazy that it ended nil-nil, but that’s because of a couple of big saves from Austin [Pack]," Charlotte Head Coach Mike Jeffries said. "The first half was pretty compact, but the second half was wide open, but we just couldn’t get the goal."

"I was happy to make some saves," Pack said. "The guys in defense worked hard, and Union Omaha is one of the top teams in the league. So, to get a point off of them is something we can be proud of and we’ll work on building with the guys and get ready for Saturday."

Saturday saw Central Valley travel across the country to take on the Jacks at ALMS. The undefeated Independence stayed that way thanks to a big Nick Spielman goal early in the match to seal a tough 1-0 victory in a largely defensive matchup.

"It’s three points and getting a win and a shutout at home is huge, and I’m so happy with that," Jeffries said. "We didn’t have the pace and intensity we would have liked to have played with. I credit our guys because we battled through it and found a way to get a result."

"It feels amazing," Nick Spielman said of his second goal of the season. "I think so far everybody is putting their body on the line, doing what they’re supposed to do, and we’re coming together pretty well."

2. Encouraging six-point Week 6 for Greenville

After limping out to the worst start in League One history, Greenville Triumph SC (2-3-0, 4th) bounced back in a big way in Week 6, dismantling Central Valley Fuego FC (1-3-1, 12th), 3-0, before defeating Lexington SC (1-3-1, 10th) on the road, 2-0.

Greenville kicked off its week with a three-goal thumping of a slumping Fuego FC team thanks to three goal contributions from 29-year-old midfielder Lucas Coutinho. The Brazilian veteran recorded his first professional brace with an 11th and 65th-minute score to go along with an assist on Noah Pialto's 42nd-minute goal.

"It was a really good team performance for sure,” Greenville Head Coach John Harkes said after the victory over Central Valley. "We added a lot more discipline to our tactical shape and focused on how we are off the ball. When the guys start doing that work and rolling up their sleeves a little bit - especially in the wide areas of the field - that’s when we can close down teams."

Triumph SC wrapped up its strong week with a more competitive game, taking down a durable Lexington SC side that was reduced to 10 men early in the contest and only conceded a second goal in stoppage time. Noah Pilato recorded the match-winning score - his third goal in as many matches - before decorated Colombian veteran Leonardo Castro finished the expansion side off with a stoppage-time dagger - his first for Greenville.

3. NCFC Finally Got the Monkey (Red Wolf?) off its back

It took eight meetings but North Carolina FC (3-1-1, 2nd) finally earned a result against Chattanooga Red Wolves SC (1-2-1, 11th), taking down the 2022 runners-up with an impressive 3-0 victory at WakeMed Soccer Park on Friday. NCFC were a Charlotte loss or draw away from finishing a matchweek atop the League One table for the first time since joining the league but were forced to settle for second following the Jacks' Week 6 win. In what was actually the first time that Rafa Mentzingen faced a former club at the professional level, the NCFC midfielder didn't hold back as he netted the third brace of his career to jump to the top of the Golden Boot race.

NCFC looked solid across the board; Oalex Anderson and Rafa Mentzingen had a pair of goal contributions, Garrett McLaughlin got in on the action with a beautiful assist late and rising goalkeeper Nicholas Holliday recorded his second professional clean sheet to go along with a clutch penalty save - the first of his young career.

"Obviously, getting a multi-goal and shutout at home in the same performance is good," NCFC Head Coach John Bradford said. "We were trying to get our first shutout of the season and the guys dug in for that.

"There were a lot of chances created, but I can’t emphasize the timeliness of Nick Holliday’s save enough. To be 17 years old and quite possibly the only starting goalkeeper in a professional league, to make that save was excellent."

"It was a big moment in the game to keep it at 1-0, so I’m really happy," Holliday said. "We watch a lot of film, and I watched [Ryley Kraft] as a player, so I was prepared and knew where to go when the time came. A lot was going on in the background that happened to make the save, so super grateful for my coaches."

4. Cassini came in clutch for the champions

South Georgia Tormenta FC (3-3-0, 3rd) continued to bounce back from a slow start to its title-defending season with a convincing 2-0 victory against newcomers One Knoxville SC (1-2-1, 9th) on Friday evening at Regal Soccer Stadium.

An even contest got flipped upside down in a hurry, and it all started with Matheus Cassini's substitution on for Mukwelle Akale in the 67th minute. Just three minutes after entering the match, the Brazilian midfielder fired Tormenta FC ahead with a ridiculous shot along the end line. A late Knoxville ejection, followed by a well-timed Cassini assist to Jackson Khoury for South Georgia's second, sealed the victory for the visitors.
