Owen Green's first professional goal secures defender Player of the Week honors

TAMPA, Fla. – USL League One today announced the Team of the Week for Week 5 of the 2023 regular season with Lexington SC defender Owen Green named Player of the Week presented by Konami eFootball after netting the match-winning goal against his former club to secure Lexington’s first-ever win.

After developing with South Georgia Tormenta FC 2 in USL League Two in 2021 and eventually making his professional debut in South Georgia Tormenta FC’s League One title-winning 2022 campaign, the 24-year-old English defender joined Lexington SC ahead of the side’s inaugural 2023 season. In his first meeting with Tormenta FC since departing the club, Green scored his first professional goal in match-winning fashion to help Lexington to its first-ever victory.

Green got in on the action early, clearing a ball off the line to prevent South Georgia from opening the scoring in the 11th minute. His biggest contribution came late in the second half, as the Leicester native gathered a long Phila Dlamini cross in the 71st minute and headed the ball over the Tormenta FC goalkeeper and beyond a sliding defender to seal the victory for the home side.

“I’m honored to be named Player of the week, and very happy to score my first professional goal,” Green said. “Getting our first win was something all of Lexington was anticipating and to do it at home, in front of our fans, makes this moment even more special.”

“Full credit to Owen on this honor,” Lexington Head Coach Sam Stockley said. “It was another fantastic performance from him, and the fact he was able to get his first goal and save another off the line was special. His performances have been getting better and better. He has an amazing attitude, and he embraces the work and everything we're teaching.”

Forward Madison FC placed four starters on the Team of the Week following its big 4-1 victory over Greenville Triumph SC, while Knoxville, Omaha and North Carolina earned spots on the Team of the Week and the Team of the Week Bench.
