Defending champs bounce back in big way

South Georgia move back up the rankings after its big derby win, while disappointing results from Greenville, Central Valley, Knoxville and Madison see the quartet drop.

Can Northern Colorado extend its early season success? When will Greenville turn the corner? Tell us why your club should rank higher and keep the conversation going on Twitter at @USLLeagueOne.

Summary

1 Charlotte Independence
(2-0-2)
Week 5: --

Last Week: 1
The Jacks extended their unbeaten start to the 2023 campaign, playing North Carolina FC to a 1-1 draw in the Dogwood Derby. Mike Jeffries’ side leads the league with six goals thanks to that scary attacking unit.
2 Union Omaha
(1-0-1)
Week 5: v. NC
1
Last Week: 3
Omaha traveled to Fresno and picked up a convincing 2-0 victory over Central Valley in the latter’s home opener. The new-look side seems to be clicking in the attacking phase, as the Owls possess the best shot conversion rate in the league.
3 Richmond Kickers
(1-1-1)
Week 5: v. NCO
1
Last Week: 2
The Kickers will return to City Stadium on Saturday after a week off from league action. A big early season test will see unbeaten Hailstorm look to remain unblemished as they visit Richmond.
4 Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC
(1-0-1)
Week 5: @ RIC

Last Week: 4
The only team in the league yet to concede a goal, Éamon Zayed and company have put together a solid squad in the second season of Hailstorm soccer. Grabbing a first-ever victory over the Kickers on Saturday to remain undefeated would be a big statement for the young club.
5 North Carolina FC
(1-1-1)
Week 5: @ OMA
1
Last Week: 6
North Carolina FC was closing in on its second consecutive victory but then Dane Kelly happened. Despite the late concession of a goal in a 1-1 draw with Charlotte, NCFC are starting to put things together.
6 South Georgia Tormenta FC
(2-2-0)
Week 5: @ LEX
4
Last Week: 10
Tormenta FC grabbed a much-needed victory over Peach States Derby rival Triumph SC to stretch its unbeaten streak against Greenville to eight. The defending champs snapped a two-match skid and welcomed back League One Final MVP Kazaiah Sterling from injury.
7 Greenville Triumph SC
(0-2-0)
Week 5: @ MAD
2
Last Week: 5
I’m not quite ready to hit the panic button in Greenville, but it’s certainly been a rocky start to the season. Triumph SC has yet to score a goal all season and are dealing with a good number of injuries early in the campaign.
8 Chattanooga Red Wolves SC
(1-1-1)
Week 5: --
3
Last Week: 11
The Red Wolves got their first win under new Head Coach Ziggy Korytoski and it came in the first meeting with Smoky Mountain Smackdown rival Knoxville. Chattanooga erased a one-goal deficit with a pair of slick second-half goals.
9 Central Valley Fuego FC
(1-1-0)
Week 5: @ KNX
2
Last Week: 7
Even though Fuego FC held nearly 55% possession throughout the match, Central Valley could only muster one shot on target against Omaha. Alexis Cerritos has looked promising early, but the second-year side will need to put more together if they hope to move up the table.
10 One Knoxville SC
(1-1-0)
Week 5: v. CV
2
Last Week: 8
After jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the 50th minute, Knoxville suffered its first league loss following a second-half collapse. If Mark McKeever’s side can find a way to capitalize on its league-best 57% possession rate, the goals might start coming.
11 Forward Madison FC
(0-0-2)
Week 5: v. GVL
2
Last Week: 9
A draw against a struggling first-year side in a match the ‘Mingos largely controlled will surely feel like a loss. It’s way too early in the season to panic, but anything less than a point against Greenville will be concerning.
12 Lexington SC
(0-2-1)
Week 5: v. TRM

Last Week: 12
A point against Madison was a step in the right direction for the young newcomers. The defense and goalkeeping have been a pleasant surprise, but increased production from Balogun, Diouf and Robertson will be key to Lexington’s early season success.
