Madison drop heartbreaking contest in extra time against visiting Chicago House AC

Forward Madison FC 2-3 Chicago House AC (A.E.T.)

MADISON, Wis. - Forward Madison FC was defeated in its 2023 U.S. Open Cup opener, falling in extra time to Midwest Premier League side Chicago House AC 3-2. The unlikely Chicago comeback ensures Madison's first-ever exit prior to advancing to the Third Round of the tournament.

FMFC controlled the match for the majority of regulation, maintaining nearly 70% possession, and accumulating almost 400 more passes and a dozen more shots than the visitors. 22-year-old forward Jayden Onen recorded his first senior team score in the 19th minute, gathering a Mauro Cichero through ball and slotting it home from a tight angle to open the scoring. The 'Mingos found their second score early in the second half as 16-year-old Mexico youth national team prospect Tino Vásquez scored his first professional goal in his first professional match, smashing in an Onen assist to become the youngest goalscorer in club history.

With no shots on target in the opening 74 minutes of the match, three of Chicago's four on-frame shots in the second half and extra time all ended up in the back of Madison's net. CHAC goals in the 75th minute, second-half stoppage time and the first period of extra time were converted by the visitors following either defensive errors or fortunate bounces.
