Pedro Fonseca's goal and assist earns the Brazilian midfielder Player of the Week honors

TAMPA, Fla. – USL League One today announced the Team of the Week for Week 4 of the 2023 regular season with South Georgia Tormenta FC midfielder Pedro Fonseca named Player of the Week presented by Konami eFootball after recording a goal and assist in Tormenta FC’s 2-0 Peach States Derby victory over Greenville Triumph SC.

The Rio de Janeiro native and 25-year-old midfielder helped Tormenta FC open the scoring in the 24th minute, providing a slick backheel assist to fellow South Georgia newcomer Jackson Khoury who slotted the ball just inside the far post. Wrapping up the South Georgia victory and teaming up with Khoury once again, Fonseca gathered a quick Khoury pass at the top of the six-yard box and hammered his first goal of the season past Jared Mazzola to wrap up Tormenta FC’s derby victory.

“This win was important for us. Now we go on the road and hope to keep this momentum,” Fonseca said after the victory. “It felt good to get my first goal and assist tonight. Winning against Greenville is always nice but winning at home against Greenville is special.”

South Georgia Tormenta FC lead the way with three Team of the Week starters after its encouraging victory over Greenville, while Union Omaha see the most combined members named to the Team of the Week and Team of the Week bench after a convincing 2-0 win in Fresno. This is the first time each of the 11 Team of the Week starters have been named to the weekly list this season.

GK – Bernd Schipmann, Forward Madison FC: Madison’s Philippine international recorded his first clean sheet for the ‘Mingos, tallying three saves and a week-high 0.88 goals added, according to American Soccer Analysis.

D – Jacob Crull, Forward Madison FC: The 25-year-old Austrian defender had a productive week to help Madison to its first clean sheet of the season, creating four chances, completing 84% of his 94 passes, winning 12 recoveries and completing six long balls.

D – Davey Mason, South Georgia Tormenta FC: Helping Tormenta FC to its second clean sheet of the season, Mason earned 10 recoveries, won six of eight duels, created a trio of chances and won 100% of his tackles.

D – Alexis Souahy, Union Omaha: Helping Omaha to its second consecutive clean sheet across all competitions, the USL Championship veteran completed 84% of his passes, dished out seven accurate long balls, reeled in 11 recoveries and recorded three clearances.

M – Pedro Fonseca, South Georgia Tormenta FC: Teaming up with fellow newcomer Jackson Khoury, Fonseca recorded a goal and an assist in Tormenta FC’s 2-0 derby victory over Greenville. The Brazilian also recorded two chances created and 81% passing accuracy.

M – Jackson Khoury, South Georgia Tormenta FC: The former Central Coast Mariners Academy winger and Lebanon youth national team prospect scored his first with Tormenta FC, recording the match-winning goal in the 24th minute before assisting Fonseca’s 39th-minute score.

M – Andrew Paoli, Chattanooga Red Wolves SC: Paoli pulled the Red Wolves level in the inaugural Smoky Mountain Showdown, dropping a perfectly placed header into the upper corner of the goal to record his first professional goal.

M – Louis Perez, North Carolina FC: Extending his efficient start to his first season in Cary, Louis Perez led the league with six fouls won and added to his side’s derby draw with 15 duels won, 10 recoveries and two chances created.

M – Walter Varela, Chattanooga Red Wolves SC: In his third appearance for the Red Wolves, the Cape Verdean midfielder scored the match-winning goal in Chattanooga’s derby victory over Knoxville. Varela also won seven duels and five fouls.

F – Dane Kelly, Charlotte Independence: After scoring 106 regular season goals in the USL Championship, the Championship's all-time leading scorer bagged his first in League One, redirecting a Gabriel Obertan shot past Nicholas Holliday in the 61st minute to help the Jacks remain undefeated.

F – Noe Meza, Union Omaha: Omaha's breakout star and leading scorer from a season ago secured his first score of the season, scoring the match-winning goal in the 45th minute against Central Valley.
