TAMPA, Fla. - As the Second Round of the 2023 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup nears its conclusion, U.S. Soccer on Thursday conducted the Third Round Draw of the 108th edition of the tournament.
As of Thursday evening, 10 of 12 League One clubs went 4-6 with three victories over USL Championship opposition in the Second Round. The Richmond Kickers and Forward Madison FC will complete their Second Round matches on Thursday, April 6 and Tuesday, April 11, respectively.
All six League One clubs remaining in the tournament will face a higher-division opponent on the road. Notably, the Charlotte Independence and Charleston Battery will engage in a Southern Derby revival, South Georgia Tormenta FC will face an MLS opponent for the second consecutive year, Union Omaha will look to upend a third MLS team in St. Louis CITY SC's first-ever Open Cup match, and Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC will hope to extend its unbeaten streak against higher-division clubs from Colorado as it meets the Colorado Rapids for the first time.
Should Richmond and Madison win their upcoming Second Round matches, the Kickers will meet DMV rival D.C. United for the fourth time in club history, and the 'Mingos will take on a Chicago-based club for the second consecutive round.
