KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - In its Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup debut and second-ever professional match, One Knoxville SC fell just short against intra-state rival and USL Championship side Memphis 901 FC in extra time, 2-1.
After an even first half hour, Memphis opened the scoring in the 38th minute as Aaron Molloy swung in a free kick to find the head of a diving Dylan Borczak. The home side struck back following the halftime intermission, however, as Frank Ross was taken down in the box to send player-coach and USL Championship veteran Illia Ilić to the spot to face Bill Hamid. In the 57th minute, Ilić converted his penalty to even the scoreline, sending Hamid the wrong way in the process.
Through 90 minutes of regulation and 30 minutes of extra time, Knoxville had plenty of chances with five corners, 13 shots and three shots on target. Still, Knoxville were unable to convert and Memphis' last-minute attempt from Jeremy Kelly found the back of the net in the fourth minute of stoppage time to seal the victory for the visitors.
