STATESBORO, Ga. – South Georgia Tormenta FC today announced the signing of defender David ‘Davey’ Mason to its 2023 USL League One roster on a one-year deal with a one-year option, pending league and federation approval. Mason was on trial with Tormenta FC this preseason and earned his contract through solid performances in the team’s preseason matches.

“The process of having players trial in preseason is not always practical, but when an opportunity arises to make players invest in your club and earn a contract via this process, you can often gain quite rewarding outcomes," Tormenta FC Head Coach Ian Cameron said. "In this instance, Davey has shown over three matches and five weeks of training that he has the capacity to adapt to our team’s way of operating on and off the field. We aim to add more attacking output from the outside back position this season and we’ve identified either converted wingers or midfielders to fulfill those roles. Davey’s pace and willingness to overlap will be an important dynamic to add combined with his defending capabilities.”

The Bethesda, Maryland native comes to Tormenta FC after spending two years with NISA's Maryland Bobcats FC. In 2022, Mason appeared twenty times totaling 1,658 minutes and contributed with a goal and five assists. Tied for the league lead in assists, Mason was named to Protagonist Soccer’s Knights Who Say NISA’s 2022 Best XI. Mason made a total of 33 appearances with the Bobcats between 2021 and 2022.

Mason’s constant offensive presence helped distinguish him as one of the most dangerous players for the Bobcats. Mason is also able to make overlapping runs and create scoring opportunities for his teammates in crucial moments. In addition to his attacking prowess, Mason’s tactical awareness and positioning on the field make him a reliable and consistent defender, who is able to shut down opposing attacks and help maintain possession for his team.

“I joined Tormenta FC because of the coaching staff’s vision for the club and its players," Mason said. "Tormenta FC’s play style suits me, and Statesboro has felt like my second home since arriving for preseason in February.”

Collegiately, Mason starred at Loyola University of Maryland, where he played and started in 36 games and totaled 3,201 minutes at Loyola. Mason contributed with two goals and seven assists. Mason is a two-time All-Patriot League Second Team and Patriot League All-Tournament Team (2018, 2019.) Mason also featured for Georgetown University from 2016 to 2017, appearing 21 times and totaling two assists for the Hoyas.
