League One newcomers set to face in-state Championship opponents, eight teams receive home draw

USL League One newcomers Lexington Sporting Club and One Knoxville SC were handed marquee draws for their debuts in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, highlighting a slate of contests that will see the league’s clubs make their first step in the 2023 tournament.

Both One Knox and Lexington will face in-state USL Championship opposition in the Second Round, announced by U.S. Soccer on Thursday, with Knoxville set to play host to Memphis 901 FC at Regal Soccer Stadium and Lexington heading to face Louisville City FC at Lynn Family Stadium during the first week in April.

Eight of League One’s 12 teams will play at home in the Second Round overall. Among them is Central Valley Fuego FC, which will play host to fellow NorCal club Monterey Bay F.C. at the Fresno State University Soccer Stadium. 2022 League One title winner South Georgia Tormenta FC will also open its campaign at home against the Championship’s Rio Grande Valley FC at Tormenta Stadium.

Union Omaha will also play host to the Championship’s El Paso Locomotive FC at Michael G. Morrison Stadium as it looks to begin another run after becoming the first League One club to reach the tournament’s Quarterfinals a season ago, while Chattanooga Red Wolves SC will play host to the Championship’s Birmingham Legion FC at CHI Memorial Stadium.

In addition to Lexington SC, three other League One clubs will head on the road including a return trip for Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC to face Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC at Weidner Field after the Hailstorm’s upset victory a season ago.

Greenville Triumph SC, meanwhile, gets a trip out west to face the Championship’s Phoenix Rising FC in Arizona, while North Carolina FC will head north to face the Championship’s Loudoun United FC at Segra Field.
