Peñaranda's rapid reaction helped preserve the Hailstorm advantage

TAMPA, Fla. – Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC's Johan Peñaranda claimed the 2022 USL League One Fans' Choice Save of the Year with a quick, one-handed reaction to preserve the Hailstorm's advantage while down a man.

Forced on as a substitute, Peñaranda got a hand to a powerful close-range header before defender Brecc Evans came in to clean up the scraps en route to a 3-1 Hailstorm victory.

"It’s a big accomplishment for me. It's a big honor," Peñaranda said. "Coming off the bench that game was very meaningful and helped change my trajectory throughout the season. Fortunately, that save also helped us win the game and keep it 3-1. I’m very glad that that save had a real impact in the game, in giving us the result.

"Another big shoutout for me is to Brecc Evans. He helped me out a lot in that save. There was a rebound there and he did his job as well. He played a big part in that save being made."

Peñaranda's save earned 81% of the vote conducted at USLSoccer.com to claim the award. Chattanooga Red Wolves SC's Carlos Avilez finished as a runner-up on 19% with his tough denial of a point-blank Union Omaha shot in the Quarterfinals of the 2022 USL League One Playoffs.
